  • Hello Chelsea,

I think so. I’ve sent my Apple Pro Res 422 sequence from FCP straight to Compressor.

I used the Maximum Quality 90 Min Setting with all settings set to best where applicable.
However, I’ve left the VBR setting alone as it was. (I also successfully compressed with the 7.5 CBR setting).

I don’t know if I may be wrong, but the two variables that seemed to affect the burn were the type of DVD disk I used, and turning off the ‘loss-less linking’ check-mark in the Build/Format tab of DVD Studio Pro.
I used Sony DVD-R disks and they all failed; I switched to another brand and they worked.
Another thing to keep in mind is to check all of your DVD Studio Pro Preferences before creating your (new) project – make sure it is in SD mode, that the VBR settings match Compressor, etc.

Let me know how it goes.

  • Nope.
Still freezes same spot. I don’t know what’s going on; I even played the DVDSP build on my comp and it played fine. Perhaps faulty disks, burn speed, faulty PS3? Should I try another film’s sequence with the same settings?

I’ll try one last time and remove all the smoothcam clips.

  • Hello Joseph,

Thanks for responding; I’m feeling that it may be those clips. I tried re-compressing the entire .mov file and it still did the same thing.
My guess is because the clips are Pro Res 4444 and have Smoothcam, they are much harder to compress correctly (my .mov file of the 4444 sequence is 45GB).

I’m will remove the Smoothcam and I’ve set my sequence to Pro Res 422 (HQ).

I’ll re-compress with the same VBR settings again (5.0-7.0) and my guess is to leave Output Fields as same as source rather than progressive – because the SD DVD is interlaced anyway, I believe.

If anyone has any other recommendations – such as maybe downcoverting first in FCP – please let me know.

  • I think I solved my own problem.

I just dropped the clips in another sequence (1920 x 1080) the 16:9 clip and will reframe each shot slightly.

  • This seems much to complicated. Isn’t there any way to just have the clone-effect for one or two frames; turn it on and off, etc?

  • I’m also not quite sure about the alpha channel business.

    My Timeline Settings Are:
    Millions Of Colors
    Gamma Correction: None

Yes. But it doesn’t give it to me in order of the reel or timecode, the cmx gives me the cut list and not the pull list.

If I export the .pdf by File –> Export –> Cinema Tools Film List. I can export the .pdf pull list that lists the sequence by reel and time code. What would be the best way of converting this to CMX3600?

  • Yes!
    Duh!

I’m still figuring out the Pro Tools. I figure I’m just going to sync everything with the audio and just match the timelines by window burns – and either do the XML audio fix after I’m done matching my 23.98 timeline to my 29.97 timeline frame by frame – or simply reconnect the audio to my Pro Tools pulled-down audio, when I figure out how to export them properly as stereo and for FCP to recognized them as 47.952.

  • Also,
I see that when I’m cutting my 23.98 picture-lock time line based off my 23.97 timeline, matching up the window burns, and even by what’s in the frame itself, the run time of the 23.98 clips are shorter anywhere from one-five tenths of a second.
I imagine this to be appropriate, due to the reverse telecine, but I just wanted to check if this was any cause for concern.
