yes you need a 10G switch. It’s $1500 bucks. And 8TB drives work great.

you will spend $8000 for four of these SSD’s. Plus the QNAP, plus the 10G switch, plus your 10G adaptors.
Why not just buy the QNAP 871T with normal SATA drives. You will get a wonderful system, that can feed your entire workgroup. And it will be cheaper. I have never used the Samsung 16TB SSD, but I can tell you that four SATA drives (not SSDs) are not fast enough for a shared storage system.

Yes, you need a dedicated server. Or a dedicated shared storage product, like one of the countless ones you see advertised right here on Creative Cow.
Thunderbolt networking does not work. You should get a nice simple 10G system, and you will be fine.
There is one for every budget, including REALLY inexpensive ones. Getting 40 TB today is easy with 6TB and 8TB drives. 8 x 8TB = 64 TB, and 8 x 6TB = 48 TB, so you will have no issue doing exactly what you want.Let me assure you that if you try to use your main Mac Pro as an editing or AE station AND as the server, nothing will work.

there is no more driver support for the R380. You must purchase an R680.
If you switch to an alternate card, the RAID formatting will be different and you will not see your media any longer. You will have to re raid the drives.There is no work around. The way the computer business works, you are doomed to spend money for the rest of your life. The R680 card will one day be obsolete, as is every single piece of hardware that is produced. That is the world we live in.

this is an excellent choice for you. the 871T can handle 4K Media without any issue for multiple computers.
If you only have a couple of users, you do not even need a switch. You just have to assign static IP address to your client computers.You CANNOT hookup two thunderbolt computers. Thunderbolt networking does not work. The thunderbolt port is for DAS (direct attached storage) for one computer. The second port is a loop for other thunderbolt devices, not a second computer. Thunderbolt networking does not work. If you need four users, you buy the Netgear 10G switch for $1500.
