I will be as rude as possible, as I am an ex New Yorker, so I am sure that you understand.You CANNOT edit over the internet. Period. Since you specifically say
“The videos will be shot from a phone most likely ” – these are low bandwidth h.264 compression videos, and these files are tiny (just like YouTube) and people can upload and download these (why they would use you, and not iCloud, or Amazon S3, or Google Drive, or DropBox is beyond me) – but these files can easily be uploaded and downloaded to a cloud site. Anything greater than this capacity – including typical ProRes files, CANNOT be easily uploaded and downloaded to a cloud site – yours, or anyone elses – without great difficulty – as the files are HUGE (as compared to typical internet bandwidth), and it simply takes TOO LONG to upload or download these huge files. For example, to upload 500 Gigs of media would take FOREVER. Amazon S3 offers a product called Snowball, where they send you a 50 TB storage array with a 10G adaptor on it that you can load from your storage product, send it to amazon, and they will up load it for you (via Fed Ex, or UPS) for $200. Of course, you now PAY for 50 TB of storage every month. And in real life, it is IMPOSSIBLE to download 50 TB of data from the internet. Let me make this clear to you – if you are Steven Speilberg, or George Lucas, or the CIA, or the KGB, you are NOT downloading 50 TB of data over the internet – not unless some cable company has run a dedicated 10G Ethernet line (via fiber cable) into your building – via point to point. And if you say “well, we have Verizon FIOS, which is Fiber” – this is NOT a dedicated line.No one is going to answer you, because what you are trying to accomplish is unrealistic – and if you simply want a point to drop h.264 files – why would they use you and your company, when they can just get a drop box account, or if they are fancy, get an Amazon S3 account ? There are plenty of “Media Silo” companies out there right now. Have you been to an NAB show recently ?
And let me say one last thing (before you blast me for being so rude) – you CANNOT edit over the internet. If Adobe Anywhere was easy (you do know that that is – dont’ you) – everyone would be doing it right now.

yes, ANY of the RAID boxes (Highpoint, etc.) will be able to use your drives. HOWEVER – I am guessing that the raid formatting is different, so you will lose you data on the drives (so you need to back it up somewhere). When you switch between an Areca, ATTO, Highpoint, and LSI Logic card, all of these companies raid config is incompatible with each other, so you are always starting from ground zero.

ok, sorry for the confusion. You are telling me that you have a Mac Mini, connected to the ARC-8050T2, and there are no other devices in the thunderbolt chain (no 10G adaptor, no second computer on the thunderbolt buss) – and you are getting choppy playback ? The ARC-8050T2 is a wonderful, very fast RAID array – as fast as anything from any other manufacturer. So I apologize for still not having a completely clear picture (because you are not contacting me) – but I must ask again – in this “isolated” system – do you have any Blackmagic or AJA products also on the thunderbolt buss ?When you run AJA System Test or Blackmagic Speed Test on the Mac Mini, testing the ARC-8050T2, what speeds do you get ? You should be getting around 900 MB/sec.

you cant take the 10G out of the equation. The 10G is the ONLY reason why any of these systems work.
A 1G network (a 1G based server) CANNOT provide reliable playback.
I don’t care if it’s QNAP, a Mac Mini, or a SNS EVO, ProMax, Small Tree, Facilis, AVID, Edit Share – without the 10G backbone, NOTHING is going to work. The QNAP 871T is just fine, as long as you use the 10G port to a 10G switch.
Same with the Mac Mini.Either way – you can have everything in your system 10G – don’t do a multi terabyte file transfer while you are editing.

As Alex said, use NFS for FCP-X. Not getting great performance ? You need NFS tuning. No, I am not giving that to you.
Raid 6 rebuild is not slow and unreliable. Who told you that ? The QNAP rebuild works fine. The Areca hardware rebuild works just fine (both ARC-8050T2 and the ARC-1883x PCIe card with an external mini sas array). Do a huge file transfer (multi terabytes) while you are trying to have multiple editing, and you will suffer, and your transfer will suffer. And this not only applies to QNAP and home made Mac server systems, but systems like AVID ISIS 5500 as well.The Mac Mini is a terrible server. It has one thunderbolt buss, so you are splitting a single x4 lane to both your ARC-8050T2 and the 10G thunderbolt box. Use a $3000 Mac Pro and use separate thunderbolt busses. Or use an old Mac Pro with a hardware areca and external minisas raid array. And the Netgear XS708E is a huge disappointment – which is why for small systems I always use the XS712T. Today, you would have purchased the brand new XS708T for the same price you paid for the XS708E.
Your QNAP will outperform the Mac Mini, no matter what you do. You should have bought 16 G of RAM for the QNAP.
If you are doing FCP X, use NFS. And dont’t transfer 48 TB of media while you are editing – no matter whose system you own.Bob Zelin

it’s under $400. There are better ones with better protection, but you could use a software product like SoftRaid, and still only spend $400.If you ask “well, how can I do this with just the equipment that I currently own, and not spend any money” – the answer is simple – you can’t.
