I am not a SAN expert, but I do know that if you are going to try to “cheap out”, you will never get even 2 clients to share SDI uncompressed video, least not HD. Cheap SAN does DV25, and since you are using Blackmagic hardware, I am sure that you are using hi quality video. There is no “cheap” solution.

I never would have guessed that in a million years ! As this thread progressed, I was thinking too that one of the drives was bad. I guess the moral of the story is – when you get unexpected performance from your Highpoint product – call tech support right away.

The Infortrend is a drive array – no different than any drive array from HUGE, Medea, Rorke, StorCase or so many others. I first discovered Infortrend when AVID chose them to be the AVID Media RAID 8, which was a RAID 5 SCSI product (using ATA drives). I have used the Infortrend (not Fibre) on many products. It is a fine product – just remember, this is a Taiwanese company with relatively limited support in the US (they like to OEM their products).

With that said, please don’t think that by buying this Infortrend will give you shared storage – no different than buying an XServe RAID will give you shared storage. It’s all the same insanity currently – you need the Fibre switch, the metadata server, the 2 ethernet busses – the usual. Is Infortrend an alternate to the cranky Apple XServe RAID – absolutely – but no different than any other third party Fibre channel array.

I hate to say it, but your single ATA internal drive SHOULD WORK for DV25. If I was there, I would “force you” to reformat the internal media drive, and try it again – as the drive may have some corruption (or is too full). It should work, and I have built systems (against my advice) exactly this way.

Jeff is SO correct – make sure you have a 75 ohm BNC terminator on the KL box Ref In, and make sure you have the 75ohm termination switch on your VTR Ref In to ON. And as Walter said – make sure that the Kona control panel (under the Control tab) is set to REF Video, and not to Free Run or Video IN.

IF the system STILL does not work, TURN OFF YOUR MAC, and turn it back on. Sometimes the Kona gets confused about the reference, and a cold boot will make it behave properly.

If you are still having problems after this, write back, and we will help you. And if we don’t, AJA certainly will.

This is what you are going to do – you are going to either go to ebay and buy a used Horita BSG-50, or you are going to mail order one (or any other NTSC black generator), and STOP THIS NONSENSE. I know that Grant and the Blackmagic crew are trying to appeal to the “I don’t have 5 cents to build my edit system” (I am not implying that Blackmagic products are cheap – they are terrific) – but I have NO IDEA of why they encourage people to do this insane “Y out” jury rig trick. ALL PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS – ESPECIALLY SONY VTRS are designed to be GENLOCKED to a black reference generator. This is not a limitiation of AJA equipment – this is ALL PROFESSIONAL VIDEO EQUIPMENT FROM THE BEGINNING OF TIME. So stop it, just STOP IT – and go out and get a color black generator – stick one BNC from the gen into your Kona LH, and another BNC form the gen into your Sony VTR Ref Video input, and you will have no problems –

AJA audio can be many things – embedded, AES or analog. Go into your Audio/Video Settings/Capture presets, and select EXACTLY what kind of audio you are feeding your system.

the frustration of these questions is that this question is asked over and over and over on the AJA and Blackmagic forums. And rather than simply scroll down, and read the answer to this question on this very forum, from several months back, you would rather simply ask, without doing simple research – which is to simply read THIS FORUM’s posts (you will find your question about a month ago, about 2 months ago, and 3 months ago, and 4 months ago – discussed over and over).

So I have a question for you – why purchase Decklink over Kona 2? What do you like?

I feel that I have the right to give you a smart ass answer, as you have not specified what you want to do – do you work with VHS material, or Sony SR5500 HD material? What do you expect your system to do – no matter what card you buy?

If you are doing anything other than DV25, I have NO IDEA of how you have been working all this time with a single ATA drive. It’s a miracle, and you should build a house of worship around your PC. Hail Roman !

since you have both PCI-X and PCI slots, use the Highpoint on one buss, and the Decklink on the other buss – then run your speed tests.
