As far as audio quality is concerned, there are no advantages. The advantage is the ability to not have to run any audio cables to get your digital audio in and out of your AJA IO or Digital VTR. Embedded SDI Audio was developed so that broadcasters could have large SDI routing switchers that could handle all the digital audio, without doing any AES wiring. You can see the advantage of this if you have many edit systems, and many Digi Beta, Beta SX VTR’s, and with a single inexpensive SDI router, you can not only route your digital video, but your audio as well, with a fraction of the labor and parts involved.
When you have a single AJA IO box, and a Single Digi Beta VTR (like a Sony J30SDI for example), you just need ONE BNC CABLE to get all the multichannel audio into the AJA, simply by selecting embedded audio. The AJA will de embed the audio for monitoring.

Behringer UB2442FXPro. $299 at many places like B+H and American Musical.
But if you don’t have the $299, they have smaller mixers, like the UB1622 (about $179) which will work.Bob Zelin

you are DREAMING if you think you are going to do complex 5.1 audio mixes inside Final Cut Pro. Apple offers Soundtrack Pro and Logic, and of course, there is Pro Tools, MOTU, and countless other audio mixing programs. Once you have your mix (or have mixed to picture), you import your 5.1 mix into FCP. You DO NOT MIX inside Final Cut Pro. Blackmagic and AJA products are not designed to work with Pro Tools, Soundtrack Pro, etc.I have heard this argument from AVID people for years, because AVID offered 8 discreet analog outputs on the AVID Meridian System 888 Audio Interface. I don’t care if the outputs are there – you can’t do a complex audio mix on an AVID system. That’s why they have Pro Tools.

STOP RESEARCHING. you are reading way too much. The Mackie Control Universal is a control surface. It is not an audio mixer, that allows you to attenuate and amplify external audio levels, and route analog audio signals. You need a CHEAP MIXER. Mackie mixers have been used since the day AVID was invented. A nice Mackie 1604VLZ for $999 will do, so will a Mackie 1402, but so will a Behringer UB2442FX Pro for $299 – and so will the cheaper Behringers – all the way down to $89. If you want to do what you did with your Media 100 (of which mine had a Mackie 1604 on it)- just get an Amplifier for your JBL speakers – or get a home stereo receiver. But RIGHT NOW – and I mean RIGHT NOW – stop listening to the audio output of your MAC G5. STOP IT. This is not rocket science, and does not require elaborate digital mixers. You need a simple way to monitor your audio, and there are cheap solutions out there. This is no different than has been done since the beginning of linear video, and since the beginning of AVID.Buy a mixer.

SDI Audio is audio that is embedded into the video stream. You use an AJA or a VTR (or expensive de embedders) to get the audio out of the video stream.
The AJA is not part of an audio mixing package. 5.1 mixing is not done inside Final Cut Pro. It allows you to get your mix into the system, and monitor, but I am not sure of what you want to accomplish.

I think you are crazy for not getting a mixer. If you want a cheap solution, and want to use your Control 5 speakers, get an Alesis Power Amp, a Samson Power Amp, or countless other low end power amps with big volume controls on them, so you can stick the output of your VTR or AJA IO into the amps line inputs. Get ready to use those volume controls !!
You really should consider a mixer – even a $89 Behringer.No matter what you do – DO NOT MONITOR YOUR AUDIO from the MAC G5 audio output !!!!!
PS – you own a $13,000 XServe RAID, and you won’t buy a mixer ?

you are NEVER going to be able to accurately monitor your audio via the MAC internal audio connector. You can get the K Box, or monitor E/E thru your VTR, or get AES to Analog converters (like a Flying Cow) for your Kona 2.
The K Box, at $299, is the best way for you to hear your analog audio.Get yourself a nice cheap Behringer mixer and a cheap set of powered speakers at your local music store, and your problems will be over. Your
JVC -10dB audio levels will never drive the analog inputs of any professional capture card properly.Bob Zelin

It’s called Kona Control Panel, and it downloads along with your Kona 2 drivers. It’s in your application folder. Go to http://www.aja.com, go to support, and download the latest AJA Kona 2 drivers, and you will have the Kona Control Panel (which also affects the K Box).

Being sort of in the same boat, there’s two issues I need covered:
1. Monitoring video (deckling multibridge studio like: pixel accutrate HD via dvi)
REPLY – AJA offers the AJA HDP, which is similar to the Blackmagic HD Link. This is not an integral part of the Kona 2.
2. Monitoring audio for 5.1 mixing. That is at least 6 channels (prefereably more) of analogue audio i/o.
REPLY – the Kona 2 monitors 8 channels of AES or SDI embedded audio. Analog monitoring is only 2 channels left and right, via the optional K box on the Kona 2. If you want 6-8 channels of analog monitoring, you will need D/A converters (but won’t your mixer do this for you ?).
3. A PCI-X to PCIe upgrade upgrade path.
REPLY -The AJA Kona 2 is PCI-X. The AJA Kona LHe is PCIe.

The Firewire drive is not fast enough to play back this uncompressed HD material. I am guessing that you still have a problem with your RAID, and you will not be able to tell until you do tests, by recording and playing back other material – perhaps at lower resolutions, like DVCProHD. If it plays back at lower resolutions, but not at uncompressed 8 or 10 bit HD, you have a RAID limitation.
I don’t care what these drive tests show that Blackmagic and AJA show on their drive exercise programs – they do not reflect (in my opinion) the accuracy of how the drives perform in real world situations.
