I’m trying to use the component out and the unbalanced RCA outs on the JVC HDBR50 deck to capture footage shot with the new JVC HD100 camera. I have the RS422 hooked up to the Kona for deck control.

First off, I’m able to capture with DVCPROHD codec without a problem, but the audio is out of sync when I try and play back, monitoring in Final Cut with built-in audio. Do I have to monitor through the k-box for it to be in sync or is there a way for me to capture and have the audio in sync for monitoring through the computer itself?

Second, the audio that I’m hearing is VERY low. It was recorded at the proper level, and I can hear the right level through the headphone jack. Unfortunately, because the deck has unbalanced RCAs on the back, i’ve had to to from RCA-1/4-XLR with a variety of cables, connectors, and adapters. Could that be the reason for the lousy levels?

Thank you. That was very helpful. I assume if finishing to film, you would recommend capturing to Uncompressed 10-bit HD. However, as you know, there are no SATAe hostcards yet available for the new Quad Powermacs. This presents a problem when wanting to capture footage with a high data-rate.

How do you recommend I monitor the captured footage? Is it necessary to do it through the KL-Box or can I use the “built-in” audio setting in FCP?

you are NEVER going to be able to accurately monitor your audio via the MAC internal audio connector. You can get the K Box, or monitor E/E thru your VTR, or get AES to Analog converters (like a Flying Cow) for your Kona 2.
The K Box, at $299, is the best way for you to hear your analog audio.

Get yourself a nice cheap Behringer mixer and a cheap set of powered speakers at your local music store, and your problems will be over. Your
JVC -10dB audio levels will never drive the analog inputs of any professional capture card properly.
