I ASSUME that you downloaded the latest driver from ATTO for your UL5D when you installed it. HUGE is a great company, and they will take care of you.

I googled the error message, and the assorted knowlege bases (from AVID and others) say that it’s an improper load of AVID Xpress Pro, when you have a PC Symphony ? Correct ? There is also mention of bad ram (which I find hard to believe).

Certainly, as has been suggested, reseat your cardset.

OK – let me get this straight here. You reformatted your Symphony PC – let the drive reformat, and then installed the OS. Then you installed the orignal AVID Symphony software, and you have the same problem ? You are sure that you are not using a “backup disk” or some sort of “restore disk” that you made – and this is the REAL AVID software, and not some strange copy, or Norton Ghost, etc. ????

disconnect all of your drive from your system (no SCSI, no fibre, no nothing), and reboot and try it again. Does your Symphony come up? If it does not, uninstall and reinstall your AVID software. If this does not resolve your issue, run AVID System Test Pro in your Utilities folder to test your cardset.

feel free to leave your I/O on for the rest of your life. This is a piece of broadcast equipment, no different than a Leitch (or AJA !) terminal chassis, which has no on/off switch on the front. It is designed for operation “forever” – and you won’t blow out the tubes if you leave it on.
However, if you do leave it on 24 hours a day, I urge you to purchase a good quality UPS to protect against lightning and power surges, and problems with the power companies, that can kill your equipment.

With all of this said, I turn my stuff off when I go home. It really don’t make a damn bit of difference. This is not old analog electronics that drifts if you turn it on and off.

The LDM-232 is a piece of crap. There is a thread on this on the AJA forums right now. Using the excellent BMD equipment, you will have much better results with the following monitors –
Apple 23″ Cinema Display
Dell 2405FPW
Sony SDM-P234b
HP 2335 23″ monitor
and the lower resolution (but still excellent) Panasonic BT-LH1700 – there will be a 26″ version of this at NAB2006.

and of course, the expensive eCinema display ($15,000).

Let me assure you that current Sony Consumer LCD TV’s that you can get at the local stereo/TV shop look better than the LDM series. I have no idea of what happened in this product development for Sony. I have been asking for the last year – how can the Sony SDM-P234b be so much better (and so much cheaper) that the Sony LUMA LDM series.

Please remember that one example I gave did not even use an edit system, but was just from dubbing a tape onto VHS machines. A Kramer 10×1 router fed the Sony LDM-1410, and there was a DELAY in the audio, which made it appear as there was a lip sync issue (which disappeared when I put in the PVM-14L1).

I mean no offense here, but we all deal with “expensive equipment” that becomes obsolete, and better cheaper products come out. Hi 8 is dead – any prosumer DV Camera will deliver superior performance to it. If you simply do DV from your DSR-11 into your FCP system (no capture card), it will give you a better image than if you upconvert your Hi 8 to HD, and do a 10 bit uncompressed HD capture on an Apple XServe RAID. You see DV (DV25) on TV news stations, VH-1, MTV, and reality shows all day long. If its good enough for them – it’s good enough for “dad with child”.

I have not seen the Canon XL-H1, but there are a slew of wonderful cameras out, and coming out. There are people out here with $50,000 Betacam cameras that are being outperformed by $6000 modern cameras. Your Hi 8 camera is over. By adding frame syncs’, etc. to it, will not improve it’s quality.

I deal with the most expensive gear in the world every day, but at home, I watch a $399 32″ Panasonic CRT TV set that I got from Best Buy. I appreciate the fact that you want to capture HD from your cable box, but I
can’t relate to your situation, relating to a professional that has to earn a living with this equipment. There are plenty of pros doing network and cable shows, with HDV.

Well, I certainly don’t know what the problem is, but I can assure you that I have not seen this problem with FCP/AJA Kona 2, on MAC G5 dual 2.7 2 Gig RAM, and the usual assortment of Beta 1800’s, etc. I certainly have seen “no communication” errors on systems (just got a call on one today) – but these problems are usually resolved by cycling power on the I/O (not on a regular basis), reseating cables, trashing preferences, and ultimately doing a clean install (of either FCP, or the entire damn system). This is not a regular problem on clean working systems.

I certainly would not want to do a ground zero rebuild for a problem that can be resolved by a reboot, and I feel your pain, but I do not believe that this is an AJA issue.

I hate to disagree with Walter on this, but I have seen the delays in the LDM series, and my clients who have them want to kill me. I most recently replaced the extremely terrible LDM-1410 (the bottom of the line model) that I had on a simple VHS dub rack, because everyone thought that the job
was out of sync (of course, it looked fine in their edit rooms, using FCP/AJA gear with Sony SDM-P234b monitors, and Sony PVM20M4U’s. I replaced
the LDM-1410 with a cheapo Sony PVM-14L1, and the problem was gone.

On top of this, the LDM-232 is a real piece of crap at $6000. The image quality on modern (2006) LCD consumer monitors are far superior (like Sony home LCD monitors). For pro applications (aside from the usual Apple Cinema, Dell 2405, HP 2335 and Sony SDM 234), the Panasonic BT-LH1700 is a good choice (damn, do I miss the PVM-20L5/1). I will NEVER use a LDM series ever again.
