I am amazed that you are getting these results with only 4 10k SCSI drives. So the answer to your question is yes, but I have tried this in the past, and never got your results. Your specs are similar to a loaded XServe RAID – so either something is up, or you have a miracle on your hands.

You did not state if you were doing SD or HD work. For SD work, even if these specs are wrong, you will still be ok, but for HD work, you will probably suffer if you don’t have more drives. Today, few people use SCSI drives, and more are using Fibre, SCSI to ATA (like HUGE and Medea), or SATA. Standard SCSI has become “old school”, and certainly expensive.

But hey – if it’s working – go for it.

boy, you are asking good questions. You can lock a Blackmagic (or anybody elses hi end capture card) to 23.98 or 24p, but the big question is – “WILL a DIGI Sync I/O lock to tri level sync (or a non standard frame rate).

It says that it supports “industry standard pull up/pull downn rates for film and video”. This is not an BMD question but a Digi question.

stolen from the Digi website –
re-digitize the audio in Pro Tools while set to pull up, then disengage pull up and the audio will then play slower (i.e. pulled down) and should sync with a QuickTime movie at video speed. Do all post work that way, and then use pull-up to bring the audio back up to film speed when outputting the audio.

Also, remember the the “Pull-up” and “Pulldown” settings in the Pro Tools Session Setup window refer to sample rate, and ARE ONLY VALID WHEN A SYNC I/O, USD, OR A VSD IS CONFIGURED in the system. Engaging pull-up and pulldown without having one of these sync boxes connected only changes the ruler location in the Edit Window, but DOES NOT actually pull up or down the sample rate.

  • how much room is left on your XServe RAID – is it almost full ?

  • 250mb/sec is more than enough for you to not get dropped frames. But I just killed an AVID Adrenaline HD by loading in Quicktime 7.1, so I would certainly start there (good luck finding QT 7.0.4 – Apple is making it tough to find on the web).

  • this is really sad, however you do state that you are doing RAID 5+ RAID 5, but you are not doing RAID 50. So you have an XServe RAID with 14 drives, but you are using them as 2 seperate 7 drive RAID 5 volumes ???? DONT DO THIS. You want ALL DRIVES striped together, so simply use the Apple Disk Utility to stripe your two RAID 5 volumes together to get a single RAID 50 volume, and try it again.

But better yet, use the Blackmagic or AJA drive speed tests, and report back your findings. 7 drives is barely enough to do uncompressed HD at 1080i.

    hi robert –
you are getting write speeds of 225mb/sec, and read speeds of 202 mb/sec. This is what I care about. Although I usually observe the write speed to be SLOWER than the read speed, this is damn good for 4 drives at RAID 0, and if you add more drives (with a card that can handle more drives), you will get performance that will allow you to do uncompressed HD at 1080i. I have no idea of what “buffered read and write” mean, or what they reflect.

If Mr. Video is only getting 60-65 mb/sec with AJA Kona System Test, then Mr. Video is doing something VERY WRONG, because a SINGLE SATA DRIVE will give you over 65mb/sec. 4 SATAs stripped RAID 0 will do dramatically faster than this (close to 200mb/sec).

I can only suspect that Mr. Video has not properly RAIDed his drives together, and is observing the speed of one single SATA drive, based on his results.

  • you can get the correct box RIGHT NOW from Ron Amborn Maxx Digital
at (714)374 4944. I just installed my first one today, and it works great.

Just for the record, 5 drives striped RAID 0 with the Sonnet E4P STILL are not fast enough to do uncompressed 1080i HD – you get between 190 and 220 mb/sec – more than good enough for SD 8 and 10 bit, and DVCProHD, but not for uncompressed HD. You will need TWO of these boxes for uncompressed HD on one Sonnet E4P. Cheap, but not free.

you will find that you have more than enough to do 8 and 10 bit SDI uncompressed, and DVCProHD, but not enough for uncompressed HD, with your configuration.

I know this will seem like I am looking for a fight (and I am not), but it seems over and over again – that it is almost a matter of pride, that you can have a hi end FCP MAC G5 system with Blackmagic Hardware, an expensive drive array, expensive monitors, and a $50,000 Digi Beta VTR, and some people would rather DIE than buy a $289 black generator, and try every trick in the book to avoid using one.

I just don’t get this mindset. The Multibridge Studio will solve all these issues in the future.
