you are shooting at 2:37 aspect ratio, and you are going to monitor on a PVM-20L5/1 with no scopes. Michael, you have bigger balls than I have ever dreamed of having. You would be SO MUCH BETTER OFF simply getting a AJA HDP and another Apple Cinema display (or some hi res LCD monitor, like the Dell or Sony or HP), and view your hi res footage that way. This sounds like it’s not for TV release. I LOVE the PVM-20L5/1 – but not for this application.
I am sure you will unhappy with the FCP internal scopes. All of my comments here are incorrect if you are just doing an offline for the edit. But if you are finishing this way – you are crazy !!Bob Zelin

Pro Max is great. The DR. Group in LA is great (you are in LA, right ?). I can’t help my usual insults though. You are shooting with a Viper, you are recording to a SR5000 or SR5500 – the most expensive VTR in the world. You are going to need VERY EXPENSIVE storage to record this signal. And you are worried about saving $200 on a deal for the Kona 3 and MAC computer. Michael – the savings you will get on your MAC/Kona 3 are the least of your financial problems, my friend. This is obviously for broadcast , or feature release. What are you doing about HD monitoring, and HD scopes ?

If you can tell me how to get ANY card inside a laptop, I will tell you how to get your Kona LHe to work on the MAC Book Pro. As for the MAC Pro – it works just fine. If you want one product that will work on both, get the AJA I/O.

for future reference, to temporarily work to output from the AJA into the UVW-1800, here is a quick trick – this is not a system solution – just a quick trick, so you don’t get the Error 093 NON Std Ref error. Feed YRB component out of the AJA into the YRB component input of the AJA. Take the composite out of the AJA and stick it into the VIDEO IN of the Beta 1800, take a short BNC loop cable, one end on the Vid In loop input on the Beta 1800, and the other end on the REF VID in on the Beta 1800 – so both inputs are getting the same signal from the composite output of the AJA box. Turn the 75 ohm term swtich on the Video In to OFF, and the switch on the Ref Vid In to ON. This is a TEMPORARY solution.The person who told you that the BG-50 would work is an IDIOT. They have no understanding of these products, or their application. This was an attempt to save 50 bucks, and have nothing but aggrivation for it. The applicaton of the BG-50 is if you are in the field, with many cameras that need to be genlocked together. You take one camera, stick it into the BG-50 input, and this will create a stable reference to feed the genlock inputs to the other cameras (and possibly a small switcher and VTR, so you can do a small shoot). This is NOT a black generator, and is not a substitute for a Horita BSG-50, or more expensive Black Generator.

this happens with AJA gear also – when you DONT HAVE THE CORRECT REFERENCE. Make sure that you have a good quality black generator going to the Genlock or Ref Inputs of both the Digi Beta VTR and the BMD. If you are using a Horita BSG-50, make sure that you have the reference inputs terminated to 75 ohms.

the cable is the Addenda RS 2/8 from http://www.addenda.com. I believe it is $98. You better have a RS232 comm serial port on your PC to use this (and not usb) – because it’s a different model if you don’t have a RS232 port on your PC.
As for the VTR – they all suck, and you should choose based on the tape types you are getting from your clients, or the camera you own. I HATE JVC ! but there is no question that the BR-DV3000 is much better than the horrible Sony DSR-11. I would suggest ebay, where you can try to find a used Sony DSR-45 or DSR-80 for the same money.
