you can get a nice 2017 iMac with thunderbolt 3 ports, and get the Sonnet eGFX box with the Vega 64 for $1299 right from Sonnet. And for your 10G port, you can just spend $177, and get the Sonnet Solo 10G which is a thunderbolt 3 to 10G adaptor. This will save you money on the iMac Pro. You will get 1000 MB/sec to the QNAP.For the QNAP, the TVS-1282T is very nice, but for the same money, you can get the larger TS-1685, which can hold 12 drives instead of 8 drives, and yes, it’s expandable and comes for free with the dual 10G ports.
I have found that the SSD’s for Qtier or simple caching do absolutely nothing for video editing performance (for HD, 4K, 6K and 8K editing with Premiere, FCP X, Resolve, and Media Composer). Save your money. And the HGST NAS series drives or the WD RED drives (same product) work great, are super reliable, and cheaper than the Ultrastars.

I was assuming the speeds were not there yet w/out proxy, just wasn’t sure. I’ve used edit share before, it just wasn’t viable for us. The EVO has been great for for the past few years so I’m leaning that way again. I do like the tape backup built into the QNAP. I wish it had a 20 Gb ethernet card as uplink so we could come from a switch.

let me make this clear to you. An Apple ProRes422 HQ single stream is 20 MB/sec. That is 160 Mb/sec. Most people to not have access to this kind of bandwidth. I just did a job for Spectrum Cable (you know – the old Time Warner) – and their corporate offices are in Conneticut (Charter Communications). THEY do not have the ability to have real time playback over the internet. And they are the cable company. The way you accomplish this is to create proxy files (FCP X and Adobe Premiere do this very nicely). You put these proxy files, which correspond to your original media on Drop Box, Google Drive, Backblaze B2, Amazon S3, etc. or you use a NAS product (like a QNAP or a Synology) that will give you remote internet access. With the QNAP, I can use MyQNAPCloud or Cloudlink to remotely open a folder that holds these files, and anyone can upload and download to this folder. Once you download the proxy files, you edit the show with h.264, and send the list back to the main edit house, where they CONFORM the show in Premiere or FCP X. With the QNAP, you can also use QVPN, which allows to you actually mount the drive right onto your remote laptop – but again, you are at the mercy of the internet connection.There is no company that manufacturers shared storage systems that can say “yes, you can edit in full res 4K right over the internet” – because none of these companies – not Adobe, not Apple, not AVID – control the cable companies or the available bandwidth. And when I see THE CABLE COMPANY can’t even (or wont even) do it for themselves – well, then you are not going to get what you want either.
Proxy workflow, and conform. That is how you accomplish what you want.
and there is no tape backup for a QNAP (if you mean LTO). There is no LTO software that works with QNAP, and there are no miniSAS ports on a QNAP that are compatible with an HP Ultrium LTO drive. When you see the backup product, its a specific Tandberg cartridge, not an LTO tape, for the QNAP.

I know I could put them on 10G with the adapters since I already have two other editors on one port with a 10G switch (each getting 5G with two 2.5G ports open) and they’re running smoothly. I just know I’m going to end up with two+ more editors in a few weeks and will have a need for the direct thunder3 sooner than later. I find your questions simply astounding. You see that the 10G ports work wonderfully. You are connecting
the other 2 computers with Thunderbolt 3, and suffering. A QNAP 10G switch – the QSW-1208-8C is $589, and because you have thunderbolt 3 computers, a Sonnet Solo 10G thunderbolt 3 to 10G adaptor is $177 each.
So you are saying “how come I can’t get this to work” when the obvious fix is $589 + $177 + $177 = $943 to completely resolve your issues. Is this a matter of principal. Why it is important that thunderbolt bridging networking works, when 10G Ethernet works absolutely perfectly ?With the Sonnet Solo 10G, you will get full 10G speeds, and you will have a 1000 MB/sec connection to your QNAP. Exactly what am I missing here ?
If Mojave resolves the thunderbolt bridging issue (which it won’t – only Intel can resolve this) – are you actually going to wait to see if this works, instead of spending $943 right now to have four people working perfectly all at the same time ?

what did people do before network storage technology ? We used videotape, and people had videotape libraries, that also needed to be organized. So you can think of your separate drives as videotapes (or even as film, in film cans) which lived in a film library, which was often temperature controlled.

almost all my clients use a single large network attached storage, with all their information on one large volume, so they can access anything they want, when ever they want. They can even remote in over the internet to see these files. And for those with the budget, we get a second redundant unit, which is kept off site, and synchronized over the internet, with built in software to do the sync. Then you are not dealing with 20 – 30 separate drives.

the TS-1677 is a TS-1685, but with an AMD Ryzen processor instead of the Intel Processor. I am sure it is excellent, but I have never installed one. If you want to be the first one that I know to get one, I will be more than happy to assist you with this. I just have no experience with the TS-1667x Ryzen based processor. It is supposed to be wonderful.
