you see, Neil and Shane –
if you would JUST STOP THINKING, and just use Apple FCP X, Apple Compressor, Apple Motion, and an iMac Pro – you would NEVER need anything else for the rest of your life (until Apple releases “the next thing”) – and everything would just work, you would never complain about things not working, and you could move on with your life (like using RESOLVE carpet cleaner, and the other important things in life)☺
What I find funny about this forum is that “we” have been using Apple products, and have been Apple “loyal” before these “kids” were even born. And they are trying to tell us about “oh, you should use Apple only”. I doubt they even know who Steve Jobs is !

In NY City in the 1990’s Flame Artists rate was $800 – $1200 a day – just for the freelancer. Those days are over.
I have no idea of who actually uses Quantel Rio’s and Clipsters today. I certainly never see them. And back in the day, almost no one ever saw a Davinci Resolve, unless you were in a handful of color correction houses. Today, everyone and his mother has Davinci Resolve.

FCP X, Motion, and Compressor – all your problems will go away, and there will be no reason for any more “debates”.
You can do everything with FCP X, Motion and Compressor, and your cost per year will be $2333, and never a need to worry if things stop working, because of Apple Care. And in 3 years, you have paid off your iMac Pro, and you get the next wonderful machine that Apple comes out with. Why do we sit here and debate all of this, when the solution to all our problems are here right now ! – is that not worth $2333 to you per year to solve all of your professional problems ? ”OK – who do I sound like ?
OH – and while I am at it – “stop using Amazon S3, Google Cloud, Backblaze B2, Dropbox, Media Silo, YouTube, and just simply use iCloud for your approval copies to your clients for FCP X – all your aggravation will go away, and everything will just work !”.

https://www.areca.com.twyour beeping is because you have a failed drive. You must launch the MRAID Utility from Areca to be able to see the user interface. This will let you turn off the horrible loud beeper, and determine which drive has failed.
I have no idea of which system you have –
if its setup RAID 5, you can have one drive fail before you lose all your data. If it’s setup RAID 6 you can have two drives fail, before you lose all your data. If you are RAID 5, and you have 2 dead drives, you are screwed.There is nothing wrong with the card in your system. You have a failed drive in your RAID array.

well, before we start blaming the iMac Pro, let’s start out by saying that with the exception of the new thunderbolt 3 Sonnet peripherals (Solo 10G, eGFX external GPU box with Vega 64) – all the third party peripherals (that you can clearly see in /Library/Extensions) will no longer install, unless you disable System Integrity Protection if you are running macOS 10.13.3 or higher. This includes SoftRAID, and everything else you see in Library/Extensions, including ARC (Areca), Promise, Sonnet, Cal Digit, and everything else that requires a third party driver. In the past, you used to install the driver, it would fail, you would click on System Preferences> Security and Privacy> General, and see that the driver install was blocked. You would click on the lock to unlock, click ALLOW, and you could now install the driver. No longer. Now you have to go into Apple Recovery Mode (command R when you are booting up) and open terminal and disable System Integrity Protection by typing in
csrutil disable
and reboot the Mac. Now you can install whatever you want. Like I said, this does not apply to NEW thunderbolt 3 peripherals, like the Sonnet Solo 10G, which just plug in and work.
And of course, you can just buy an iMac Pro, that already has the Vega 64 card and the 10G port.SEE – if you stop thinking, and just give Apple the money, and run only Apple Apps, then you won’t have any of these problems anymore ! ☺
This of course, is the reason I have no hope for the possible release of a 2019 Mac Pro. With the current mindset of Apple, and the current “reason” many even want a Mac Pro – what on earth makes you think that you will go out and get a “new Mac Pro” and install any NVidia GPU card, any RAM, any CPU, any 10G card that you want ? YOU will not get to choose. It will be an APPLE HARDWARE PARTNER. So much for Mr. I Can Hot Rod This Myself So Much Better. That’s not going to happen (in my opinion) even if there is a new Mac Pro in 2019.

As he mentioned in the video, I was amazed that he spent all that money, and chose the NVidia GTX-1070 instead of the AMD Vega 64, knowing that he was going to suffer thru the build, and then not get the results that are setup in the macOS for the Vega 64.
Boy – this is more effort than I would have been willing to go through ! Many people never get that when it comes to the “little things” (like where are the damn screws to screw in the motherboard to the case) – those are the things that can drive you crazy.

Alex Reply: Ah sorry what I meant was just ‘will my 8 drives actually saturate a 10gbe connection? Or would the extra bandwidth of 40gb/s thunderbolt 3 give me something extra? From what I gather you aren’t a fan of Thunderbolt 3 qnaps though having just found some other threads.
REPLY – this is correct. While the TVS-1282T3 and TVS-882ST3 are fantastic units, they are fantastic when they are used with 10G connections. With the advent of the Sonnet Solo 10G for $177 street price, what’s the problem ?

Alex Reply: Thanks man. I guess my big question still is why the thunderbolt 3 units should be avoided? Some of the posts about this have gone over my head tbh. This is my first NAS and I’m not up on all the ins and out. I am definitely getting the vibe that there’s no point in that platform but I’d love to be fully illuminated on the issues with those. Are they just a distraction in this market?
REPLY – people think that “oh, I have this FREE built in thunderbolt 3 port, I can have this connection FOR FREE !”.
You are limited to a 2 meter connection with thunderbolt 3. If you extend, you drop down to thunderbolt 2 speeds. With the Sonnet Solo 10G for $177, you can run 55 meters at FULL SPEED, and if the cable breaks, you spend 10 quid to replace it. And you will have a super reliable connection. There is this fascination with thunderbolt 3 connection, as if it’s some miracle. It’s not. What I can say, is that if you don’t care about a shared storage system, and just want a big drive array, you can purchase a wonderful thunderbolt 3 RAID array from G-Tech, Promise, or Areca, and just plug it in, and it will work, without any configuration from me. Now, THATS easy. The QNAP is not that easy. No network attached shared storage system is.Bob Zelin

I was wondering what you thought about the new Thunderbolt 3 Qnaps? My instinct is that I won’t saturate that connection with 8 drives so they seem expensive to me maybe. However I wouldn’t need any adapters so would save there.
REPLY – well, you need 8 drives. Period. The drives cost more than the QNAP. You will be using a 10G connection, not a thunderbolt 3 connection, to connect to your Mac or PC workstations.
All I want to do is have a NAS running dropbox as we use that for everything (we’re based in many locations).
REPLY – the QNAP can do an automatic backup to Dropbox. It’s a feature that’s built in for free. Of course, you can’t edit over the internet. It’s not fast enough. But you can move files around. You are at the mercy of your internet connection speed.
In addition I would like to attach my PC and Mac Laptop to the NAS directly so they can share files and I can edit video straight off the box.
REPLY – you will connect via the 10G ports. Your Mac Laptop needs a Sonnet Solo 10G for thunderbolt 3 or Sonnet Twin 10G (or Promise SanLink2) for Thunderbolt 2. Your PC can use the ASUS or QNAP 10G NIC card, which is about $100 US. Yes, you can edit right off the QNAP.
I am thinking that a 10gbe direct connection to both systems would be plenty of speed?
REPLY – you will get about 900 – 1000 MB/sec from the PC if you use the ASUS or QNAP 10G PCIe card (or the Sonnet Presto 10G, which is about $280 US). With the Solo 10G Thunderbolt 3 adaptor, you will get 900 – 1000 MB/sec and with the thunderbolt 2 adaptors, you will get about 800 MB/sec. If you get the cheaper Akitio, you will only get about 300 MB/sec.

REPLY – if its not the horrible Startech 10G that uses the Tehuti 10G chip, then you are ok. We can try it, and then add the ASUS 10G card for $99 if there are issues. The ASUS, and QNAP both use the Aquantia ACQ-107 10G chip which is the same chip that’s in the iMac Pro.My laptop has thunderbolt 3 only. So I guess I’d need the expensive converter box for that which might use up some of the price difference between the non-thunderbolt and thunderbolt qnaps.
REPLY – the Sonnet Solo 10G is $177 at B&H Photo in the US. I am sure that https://www.span.com in London sells it as well. If you consider this to be expensive, then we are both wasting our time right now.The two I’m considering are: Qnap TVS-873e-8G or Qnap TVS-882BRT3-i5-16G and the price difference in the Uk is around £500.
The TVS-873e is a bare bones 8 bay box, with no 10G card in it. You MUST order either a QNAP LAN-10G2T-X550 card for this ($359 US) for dual port connection, or if you are getting a 10G switch (like the QNAP QSW-1208-8C which is $589 US) then you order the QNAP QXG-10G1T card for $139 and put this into the QNAP TVS-873e. This is a single port card, that connects to a switch.
The TVS-882BRT3 is a backup unit. Why would you consider this model ?Ask any other questions that you may have. I do this all the time, all day long.
