what editing software are you using –
FCP X, Premiere, AVID, Resolve ?
For Premiere, you keep your Media Cache on a separate SSD (or the boot drive) and make sure that you clear out your Media Cache on a regular basis.

You have not specified anything about your current drive. How does it connect – Thunderbolt 2, Thunderbolt 3 or USB. USB is too slow.

and I think about audio tools like Antares and Melodye for auto tune correction for singers that can’t sing. So with the continued development of facial recognition, sound libraries, AI for the Mac and the eventual appearance of an 8K iPhone.

So here’s how it works – you get your footage (hey, someone has to have an idea !) – and you import it into the footage (this will all be Bluetooth 10G speed of course). And you select one of the new Apple templates (sales video, music video, action video) and with the help of AI, facial recognition, and pre built music libraries – the show edits itself ! There is even improved voice recognition for the “editor” (apple has renamed this “image constructor”)
and you can say “insert a dissolve here” or “fade out to black” – and it does it. No key strokes. Find that image of Tiffany dancing the routine ? No problem – facial recognition is fully functional, and finding those shots of Tiffany dancing away is a verbal command. Who needs those pesky Keyflow/CatDV/Axle programs anyway ! Now, its not innovative cutting edge editing – but hey, it’s a sales video, it’s a local band or wedding band, it’s people filming the school football game (which airs on the local cable channel and the schools YouTube channel).

So guess what – you are all out of a job (except the guys in major shows in LA). Good luck with your new careers.

this is an AVID DS Story
I certainly don’t recall the year (some time in the 2000’s), but it was at Electronic Arts (Tiburon). Electronic Arts purchased two or three AVID DS systems and hired Kelly Austin from The Golf Channel to be the DS Artist. Kelly was one of the few people that knew how to use it, and was good at it. A few years later, a directive from management came down to GET RID of the AVID DS systems, and buy ANYTHING ELSE – why ? Because the AVID DS Support contracts were $9000 per year per system, and Electronic Arts was not going to pay for this. SO – what did they choose – FCP – just like everyone else in the early – mid 2000’s. The acceptance of FCP was a financial decision (and it was actually a pretty good program) while all the “old school” AVID editors all said “FCP sucks” (hey – those old school AVID editors that still exist in LA STILL say that FCP sucks – and everything else sucks).

And for the three youngsters reading this thread written by old men – that free Davinci Resolve that you are now using – that was made in Coral Springs Florida, a Davinci Resolve system (with SGI computer) cost $400,000.
Today – free (ok, 35 grand if you get the full control panel). And the Teranex (made right here on Sand Lake Road in Orlando Florida) was between $60,000 and $80,000 – now $1695 new.

of course, no one has brought up Quantel. It’s hard to believe that a Quantel Painbox was $250,000. So were single channel AMPEX ADO’s. And people would have 4 channels of them !

Of course what bothered me (everything bothers me) – is when I started to talk about Adobe Photoshop, and the Painbox guys would call it “Photo-toy”. All these guys that made fun of all the “cheap stuff” (including AVID, etc.) – well, they are all UNEMPLOYED now. And since this is the Final Cut Pro X debate forum – all the guys that make fun of FCP X – well, just wait and see what happens. (and I am no great fan of FCP X – but I see what is happening).

Do you think I should separate out the subnets of these 2 10GB Ethernet channels?

REPLY –
NO – I suggested in my reply that this was your problem. I just went thru this with John Davidson at Magic Feather in LA, with his FCP X systems. He had the same issue. USE A SWITCH – connect to the same IP, and your problem will go away.

Here – I will show you how to prove this to yourself, before you spend a penny.
Connect from system 1 to 10.20.10.100. Open a library, modify it save it.
disconnect this cable from system 1, and plug it into your second Mac.
connect from system 2 to the SAME IP address – 10.20.10.100. GEE – look, it works now.

WELL – how do you get around this without buying a 10G switch ? You don’t. The QNAP QXG-1208-8C is
$589 for an 8 port 10G switch. Buy it RIGHT NOW from Amazon, and your problem is over.

Re Question 2:
Interesting you should ask this, So a month or so back, our System 2 user (Who users Prem Pro on his Mac), was having issues with crashing and losing data. We were all connected by SMB3. We didn’t know what to suspect, so added AFP option and connected him that way, with the other 2 systems still connected by SMB3. We have always had NFS turned off.

I know mixing NFS and other protocols was a big no, no, but wasn’t sure about SMB and AFP. Do you think this will have caused us issues?.

REPLY – every variable is a problem. People think I know the answers to all these issues – and I certainly DO NOT know the answer to this. I just have people call me and say “hey, this is not working” and then I observe what they are doing, and I can then go AH HA ! Your QNAP in Network Settings MUST be set to SMB3 (not the default of
SMB 2.1 – do you know where this is). Connect all your systems via SMB and your problems will go away. OR you can not pay attention to Apple saying that AFP is being phased out, and JUST use AFP, and you will have no issues.
Let me give you an example – that editor Oliver Peters just discovered. This is not your issue, but it shows the typical insanity that happens.
Oliver called and said “the QNAP is showing ? instead of the name of the folders”. I logged in, and thought “ok, it’s corrupt” and I created a new folder, moved the media in QNAP File Station, and everything started to work. But it kept happening. I had no idea why. WELL – Oliver put the effort out to find out why. This is a repeatable problem that I have demonstrated to QNAP support. I don’t know if this is an Apple thing, or a QNAP thing, but it’s annoying, and it’s avoidable. Oliver gets field drives in where they mount and work in AFP. They transfer the data into the QNAP, mount and they get a ? if they mount with SMB. So I initially said – “well, mount with AFP” -but they did not want to do that.
This is the problem that Oliver discovered, after studying the problem.
If you create the folder mounted with AFP and call the folder “Matt Wright” there will be issue when you mount
it with SMB on the QNAP. BUT – if you called the folder in AFP “Matt Wright ” (do you see the blank space that is after your last name) and now mount it on the QNAP with SMB – instead of seeing Matt Wright folder, you see “?”
with no data !

Simple solution – pick a network protocol you want to use and stick with it.

In 1980, I worked as a tech for National Video Center on 42nd St. in NY City. They had Paltex editor controllers with their huge GVG300 switchers and 1″ VTR’s. As the industry moved forward, I would see their “senior editors” say all kinds of bad things about CMX, Sony, GVG, etc. because they KNEW Paltex, and everything else “sucked”. I was amazed by this attitude back then.

As time went on, I observed the same behavior of editors (to this day). GVG and Sony suck, because “real editors” use CMX. Then AVID sucked because real editors used linear video to “on line” with. (and during the linear days, every new VTR format sucked because nothing was as good as whatever they owned at the time). The linear editors refused to learn AVID, because the AVID editors were not REAL editors. Then AVID took over, and FCP sucked. Because the AVID editors did not want to learn FCP. And then Premiere, and now Resolve and FCP X.

It is a common behavior that I have seen throughout my career, after a certain age. “I know how to use XYZ, and everything else thats new SUCKS and I am not going to learn how to use it – why – because it sucks”.

To me, that is the real laughable behavior I have seen over the decades. Refusal to learn because “what I know is the best” – because they can’t be bothered to learn anything new. This certainly applies to the IT directors I meet to this day.

2 suggestions –

1) are you connecting with a switch to the SAME IP address on the QNAP, or are you connecting from each Mac to a direct port, and using a separate IP address to connect to the QNAP on a different subnet for each computer.

For example – does EVERY Mac connect to the QNAP at the same IP address – like 192.168.2.3, or do you have the Macs
setup where one Mac is on Eth 5 at 192.168.2.3, one Mac is on the 6 at 192.168.3.3, etc. ? You must be connecting to the same IP address to avoid this issue. How to accomplish this – simple – a switch.

2) were you using a different network protocol to connect, and now you are using something else.? For example, were you connecting before with nfs://192.168.2.3, and now you are connecting with smb://192.168.2.3 ?

Let me know. I install QNAPs constantly, and I have not seen issues with QTS 4.3.4.0597, but I do see that people say “I changed nothing” and then I see they are using different techniques for connection, or have done things like update their macOS, etc.
