I see you are in Oregon –
I have just finished Fullelbox in Oregon City with their new QNAP, just on Friday. They have a QNAP TS-1685
I did Delve Media in Bend Oregon with a TVS-1282T
I did Treehouse in Portland with a TS-1685
I did Pinata Post in Portalnd with a TVS-EC1080U (against my advice).

The best values currently are the TS-1685 and the TS-1677x.
While the TVS-EC1680U is a great product, and I install it all the time, QNAP is about to release the new
TS-1677XU-RP rack mount, which is the 16 back rack mount version for about $3000 less than the TVS-EC1680U.

All of these models will easily handle 5 – 6 editors (and more) all doing 4K editing at the same time.
The 10G ports are built in. All you need is a small 10G switch, and the Sonnet or Promise 10G adaptors
for your computers.

Any of these boxes will give you over 800 MB/sec per client – more than enough to do 4K editing.

Hi –
this is just a guess. Many network issues are more complicated then just “ok – just click on this and you will be ok”.

I have a router (used to be Apple Airport Extreme, now it’s a Synology RT2600ac), which connects to multiple Apple Airport Express boxes as repeaters. I have 3 Apple TV’s. ONE of the Apple TV’s gets its ethernet internet connection from one of the Apple Airport Express boxes. Within the last 6 months, this Apple Airport Express (which connects via WiFi, not hard wired internet) – ALWAYS loses the connection (every couple of days). The only reason I even know this, is because I cannot get that Apple TV to work in that one room. IF you go into the Apple TV Menus (using the remote, not your phone or iPad) – you can see that it says “no network found”. So I UNPLUG the Apple Airport Express, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in, let it reset, and all of a sudden, the Apple TV now has it’s ethernet internet connection, and then it works again.

In a professional environment, this is unacceptable. Things have to work.
SO –
1) run a WIRED Ethernet signal to that Apple TV, don’t allow for WiFi access (you say “well, that’s almost impossible” – well, make it possible
2) Apple Airports and Apple TV’s are old technology, and have become unreliable (you say “well – it used to be reliable at one time”) – well, things change.

My other Airport Express repeaters and Apple TV’s get a wired connection from a central 1G switch. Never have any issues with those.

If WiFi connection becomes a “must” – get rid of your Apple WiFi network, and switch to a modern 1G “ac” WiFi network that is a MESH wireless network (like from Netgear, Ubiquiti, and others).

welcome to the world of electronics. I go thru this, everyone goes thru this. Tough noogies.

as Jerzy writes, I personally use rsync – and I use it on ALL systems, but many people don’t want to deal with all the command line “DOS” crap, that us “techno guys” are used to.

I was going to write a whole rant about Ryan’s post, about not wanting to spend the 40 – 50 bucks to buy easy to use software, but I know it’s Ryan’s boss, and not Ryan who is at fault. I know his boss is some A#$%@#$ that is my age, that hired Ryan, and told him “I am not spending one penny – you told me that you could do this job – now GO DO IT or you are fired”. Being his bosses age – if I knew I was going to die in the next couple of months, I would fly to Ryan’s location, and simply kill his boss, because he would rather torture his employees, rather than allocate the proper funds to do this job simply and efficiently.

What on earth has happened to our industry. We used to get $1200 an hour.

if you had a second QNAP, you would use the free built in Hybrid Backup Sync RTRR (real time remote replication) which you can schedule for when the backups happen.

But since your #2 unit is the Drobo, you must mount these 2 units on a Mac, and use a product like ChronoSync or Carbon Copy Cloner to do the backups.

Hi –
just tried it. QTS 4.3.5, installed QSirch
Mounted the QNAP volume on the Mac desktop with SMB.

If you to to the normal Apple Spotlight in the upper right corner of the screen, you are correct – it does not find files, the way you would see a locally mounted drive. If you click on the Mac HD, and in the spotlight Search window (upper right) enter the file name that you know lives on the QNAP, the Mac OS displays
Search: This Mac, and Shared
If you highlight “Shared” it finds the file on the QNAP that you are looking for.

Of course, for people that have NO IDEA of where their files are, (it could be anywhere, on one of 10 drives mounted) – then you are correct, this is not working correctly. But if it’s just a file you are trying to find on the QNAP, and you point to the QNAP (by highlighting “Shared” in the search window) – then it does find the file.

I know that most people want to say “I have no idea of where the file it – that’s the point of Spotlight – I just type in what I am looking for, and Spotlight searches everything to find my file – whether it’s on a local USB drive, or my network drive” – well then, you are correct – it appears to not work this way.

there is only ONE thing that matters to me – PROFESSIONAL USERS.
I dread the day (and I hope I am dead before this happens) – when EVERYONE knows how to edit and our industry is (almost) over. As I well know, and have said before – there is still a printing industry (but tiny), and there will always be professional editors (and it will get tiny in the future).

The fact that (I am making this up) – 1 million of those FCP X users are “Instagram influencers” that are 25 year old girls, each with 25,000 followers means absolutely nothing to me. These people are not making their living as editors.
I see countless musicians that now own the technology to make great recordings of their own bands – and do exactly this – and this helps them get bar jobs and Disney Springs jobs in front of restaurants, but it has eliminated 95% of the professional recording studios. So to say that “so and so is the MOST POPULAR audio recording and mixing program” means nothing to me, unless it’s being by PROFESSIONALS with high end budgets that are doing major projects (and making major money).

I know the end it near for us ( most of us) – I just don’t want it to happen yet. Just look at me. If there was not corporate greed, and political payoffs from cable companies to politicians, the reality that ALL OF US could have a 10G connection back to a cloud service would actually exist. And then people like me, would have nothing to do for a living – because why would you own your own storage for your Mac, if you could do 8K editing with “Google Drive” or “iCloud” for $200 a year.

Yes – one day, everyone will know how to edit, and it will all be over for most of us. Today is not that day.

Hi Lor –
this is NOT a dumb question. h.264 footage from GoPro’s and DJI drone cameras ALWAYS stutter, and as Shane has pointed out, this footage must be transcoded. This is a VERY important post, because “everyone” always wants to blame the storage, but it’s NOT the storage – it’s these horrible codecs implemented by Go Pro and DJI.
This exact problem occurs with other editing software, like Adobe Premiere. Many people seem to get very upset by all of this, but it’s just fact of life with these highly compressed codecs.

Thank you for asking this question. It was a very important question, that many people don’t want to deal with.

the QNAP TS-1685 is an excellent choice. Make sure to get the 16 Gig model, and not less RAM for the number of users that you have. After RAID 6, you will have 80 TB of usable storage with twelve 8TB drives. As I mentioned before, you will get two built in 10Gbase-T ports included with this system. This will connect to your Netgear XS708T switch, and work perfectly. You DO NOT need to get the SSD’s for this model, as it’s for cache only, and you will not see a performance increase from this for conventional video editing of 4K images.
