just screw it into your rack. You don’t need rack rails.
There will be no stress problems on the chassis with the
NA381TB fully loaded, and just being supported by the screws on the
front.

This is not a Sony VTR. And it’s not a 30″ deep Apple Xserve.

Even HP Libraries – I mount them on rack support shelves (no bottom, just the sides). I hate those rail kits. The only kits that were ever good – even in the VTR days were Chassis Trak or FEC from Long Island (they made Sony’s kits for the D2 machines).

I use Middle Atlantic Slim 5 series 20″ deep racks for most of my installations, and they work just fine. If it sticks out of the back – it makes it easy to get to the connectors !

this was such a great thread. You can see the “future” in this thread –
“all my employees have iPhone 8’s that can shoot in 4K – Apple is putting all this beautiful footage on TV and the web, shot with iPhones – why the HECK do we need to hire YOU, when we can just get our staff to shoot it. And my secretary makes great looking videos with iMovie, and we post it on iCloud (or our YouTube Channel or Vimeo) – and our clients love it. So WHY should we pay you even 1 penny ? “.

Just wait – that day is coming. We are in the printing business, and unless you are a hi end printer, you are out of business. There is always a hi end market – and the only way to survive is going after that piece of the business. Remember, not that long ago, a corporate “happy face” convention video was a van load of equipment. Today it’s a guy with his laptop and his Canon camera. And he is worried that the parking rate at the convention hotel is going to cut into his “profit” too much.

Hi Mike –
my response to you is the same response, and the same beating I give to everyone. A reply I have posted on this forum, and other forums on Creative Cow. If you had 10 employees, I would be googling your name, and trying to call you now. But you are not. You are in a big company with 200 computers, and an IT department, that “doesn’t want to hear it”.

There are lots of people here, including me, that can solve this issue for you. Many of these people advertise on Creative Cow, and many have their own forums. But this is the problem. You have an IT department “that knows it all”. They don’t want me – they don’t want Brand X or Brand Y – they want to use THEIR servers, their drive arrays, their switches, and MOST IMPORTANT – their knowledge (certainly not me, or the other companies that can actually make this work for you). And until you can resolve this issue, you will never have a working system.

Here is what you have to do, to get things working. But of course, you won’t do this, because you do not want to lose your job. You need to go to your boss, or HIS boss, and say “look, these IT guys we have in this company are really great, but they just don’t understand how to make this stuff work. We need a dedicated server system for just 4 users, so it won’t cost a lot of money, but the staff IT crew probably should NOT be involved”. Of course, when Mr. Head IT hears this he will say “SCREW YOU” and screw Bob Zelin (and screw anyone else that is qualified) – because he don’t need no stinking outsider that thinks he knows everything, and can accomplish more than what he, and his team can accomplish.

And so you will not have a working system. Until you or your boss, or his boss, says “enough is enough”, and “lets call so and so from Creative Cow” and then you will have your answer. Of course, because I personally do this all the time (and so do SO MANY others on this forum, who know as much or more than I do) – this is what will happen next. Someone will eventually call me, or someone else that advertises here. And they will say “just a minute, let me get my IT guy on the phone with us” – and we will talk, and he will say “I can do everything this guy is talking about – we can get one of those new Dell Servers, and Cisco 10G switches with the backplane, and we can do the same thing”. And this is what will happen. He will budget for this, which will cost dramatically more than anyones turnkey system that you see here on Creative Cow (for 4 users). And it still won’t work. And then he will say “I knew that guy that I talked to was an idiot, and gave us wrong advice – it’s got to be that damn Adobe software that is causing all of these problems”.

I tell you this little story, because it’s a story that I see over and over and over again. Your IT crew can’t get it to work. And guys like me (or the other vendors on Cow that know how to make this work) are not going to tell him all the little details for free, just so that he can be the big hero in your company “see, I got that video stuff working !!!”.

Your only chance is to reach out to one of the companies or individuals that you see on Cow, on these forums, and ASK THEM – not your IT crew – for help. Hey, your IT team can simply BUY a turnkey system from one of these companies, and install it as a dedicated system, and it won’t cost that much. But in reality, it’s not that complicated – and you can do this yourself, so can any of the 4 people on your team. There is no need to talk about IOPS and bandwidth. You just say “lets give these people some money, and we can have a working system”.

Will this happen – from my experience, probably not. Because you would have made some calls already to the banner ads that you see advertising right in front of you, right this second.

Option 1. Quantum Stornext – 80TB useable for editorial with a 80 slot lto-6 tape library

REPLY – I find Quantum Stornext to be overly complicated, and overly expensive for what they offer. I don’t like having to pay for a license for each Stornext client. I don’t like fiber channel connectivity when 10G (and even 1G) works perfectly fine in 99% of the workflows.

Option 2. Expand our Small Tree Titanium Z well over 200TB useable and add a StoreDNA archive or LTO-6 Library from Oracle and run archiware.

REPLY – what a great solution. You have a working Titanium Z, keep going. Expand your storage. Everything can be 10G Ethernet, and if you need lots of smaller workstations with less bandwidth, you can simply add a 10G to 1G switch from Netgear, and have lots more clients connected to the system. Don’t you get great support from Small Tree ? Do they charge you a license fee for each computer ?
StorageDNA makes a great LTO backup system. These guys understand our industry, and while I like some other LTO solutions, StorageDNA is an excellent choice, that will connect up right into your Ethernet network, making archive very easy. I had no idea that Oracle even offered any hardware solutions.

In both areas we are looking at CatDV or Portal to run as a MAM on top of the systems. Not looking to start a flame war, just curious about people who have had to install similar systems.

REPLY – CatDV is wonderful. It’s one of the main asset managers I install all the time. Again, runs on a Mac, easy to use, easy to tie into your existing Small Tree Ethernet network. I like easy.

We have also looked at Promise, OpenDrive, Oracle, Promax and they are all great options

REPLY – OpenDrive – I wanted to start crying at NAB when I saw their system. It’s insanely fast – the chassis they showed at NAB had 72 SSD drives, doing 5K and 6K dpx workflow is nothing for this company. I was intimidated by the Solaris operating system (as I know nothing about it), but it’s a 40Gig Ethernet based system, using Mellanox and Solarflare cards. It’s great -if you can afford it. Promax Platform is a wonderful system, but your current Small Tree outperforms it. Why change. Promise makes fiber channel drive arrays, so if you are going to setup your Stornext system from Quantum, this would be choice of drive array. Or you could use Infortrend. I was not aware that Oracle was in the video shared storage business.

You will find that everything works today – there are no bad systems – only super cheap ones (like Drobo) which you are not considering, and in defense of Drobo – they never advertise themselves as a shared storage system. If it were my nickel, I would stick with an Ethernet based system, just like you have now – be it 1G, 10G or 40G.

As for the pet – I have two birds, and they poop on me every day.

what is not made clear in this article, is that NONE of this would have happened without the assistance of Ronny Courtens, who is a workflow expert in FCP-X. I am still amazed that all of these people are working without issue. This is all due to Ronny’s guidance and complete knowledge of FCP-X, and it’s limitations.

You can get wonderful lto solutions from storage DNA,archiware, toils,etc. but oracle? Are you kidding me?

Of course, all of this is OLD SCHOOL – because you and your associates think that “time capsules” are just like the past (where you have a notebook, or a photo that you stick in a time capsule”.

As of NOW – time capsules exist RIGHT NOW – but you and your associates don’t like the concept.
It’s called a CLOUD SITE. Here is how it works – you pay Apple (iCloud) or Amazon (S3) or Google (google drive) or DropBox, to store your Time Capsule information – and if YOU PAY THEM for the NEXT 10 YEARS, guess what – as technology changes – they will be sure to make sure that your “time capsule” information is easily accessible. This is the future for many companies (especially Apple) – to develop the trust for their users to PAY for iCloud, store all your music, photos, documents, etc. on their iCloud site, and PAY for it FOREVER, and rest assured, it will be there, at the click of a mouse (or touch screen) whenever you want it. They will take care of it for you, without you having to worry.

But you say “NO – I want to have a time capsule, so I can have someone in the future open it up and say “wow, look what they said 10 (or 20) years ago”. Well TOO BAD – the game has changed – the big monster RICH companies want EVERYONE to have a “time capsule” (all their documents) – that is the BIG investment of the mega companies – to create a mega cloud site that you “trust” and will PAY for for the rest of your life – and their income will depend on you (and everyone else) paying for it FOREVER.
The cable companies (Comcast, Time Warner, etc.) are a beginners model of this. When “they” have billions of dollars in monthly subscription fees available, they will be happy to take your USB2 media and convert it to whatever exists in 2025 – because you (and everyone else) has paid for it for the last 10 years.

that’s the future – and if you don’t like it – well, too bad. That’s the game today. I don’t like it – but I recognize what’s happening, and all the “big players” are in that game.

you will get the same performance with 6g drives with the 1882x or the 1883x. If you can get a good deal, get the 1882x.
I have never used the cards with the larger cache, so I can’t answer your question.
a 16 bay will give you about 1400 MB/sec. with either card.
