  • New Raid Card for Mac system (Areca 1882x or 1883x or… ?)

    Hey guys,

I have a Mac system and I’m shopping for a new RAID card right now. (external 8-bay RAIDs)
Having a flexible budget and willing to pay for performance and reliability I was gonna go with the Areca 1882x. But I’m super opened to other suggestions. (any cards out there with more external ports?)
The only thing that bugs me is it’s only 1GB of cache and not upgradable like the 1882ix. But the 1882ix only has one external port which is an issue for me since I’m daisy chaining a couple of 8-bays.

Also now they came out with the Areca 1883.
I use SATA drives thus I won’t benefit from 12G but I wonder if it would be worth it being a more future proof investment? Are they planning to make 12G SATA drives in the future?
The price difference in the Areca 1883x and 1882x is marginal. You get 2gb of cache with the 1883.
I would go with the Areca 1883 but I wonder if it’s reliable right now being a new product and also wonder if there could be issues with the 6G > 12G cables (besides being more expensive).

Lastly are the performance gains going from 1gb of cache to 2gb or 4gb significant?

    Thanks!!
    Emmanuel

    Hi Bob,

I was offered a used 1882x from a source I trust at a very good price. If I use SATA drives and no 12G SATA drives are on the horizon then I gain nothing performance wise with the 1883x correct?

I understand more cache should help with write operation. Could you enlighten me on the real world performance gains of having larger cache?

    Thank you !

you will get the same performance with 6g drives with the 1882x or the 1883x. If you can get a good deal, get the 1882x.
I have never used the cards with the larger cache, so I can’t answer your question.
a 16 bay will give you about 1400 MB/sec. with either card.

Bobs right (of course) but as far as “future proofing” get the 1883X
