Wondering about such things as:
– is a database of what’s on the tape stored on the tape, so that the tape could be read from any system with compatible drive?
– is the software cross-platform? does the same software need to be used for retrieval?
– what are the differences between using DLT, SDLT & LTO?
– anything else I didn’t know to ask? -
Have you monitored the SDI output of the Ultimatte to confirm video out? Minimize the variables to troubleshoot.

Yes, the camera will offload directly to a certain type of external 1394 drive (says in the manual what 1394 type). However, 1] it is slower than using PCMCIA transfers 2] you end up with a bunch of NONAME folders in a bunch of drive partitions (confusing) 3] the camera can’t do anything else while transferring (that’s a biggie) 4] you can’t view clips & take selects.

Downside on 1394 is that it “downs” the camera for the duration of transfer. Fine if you’re not shooting past card capacity… serious issue if you are.

Only tried cam -> HDD once, and it made a single 4GB partition on a 200GB drive. If i’d offloaded another card, I assume it would’ve made a 2nd 4GB partition? Inquiring minds want to know (who didn’t have the patience to do it themselves).

Or run the 1394 thru a laptop running capture software. That’s REALLY handy for long talking heads, etc. I put my HPX into loop record mode, and when there’s a chance to stop recording on the laptop, check the files on disc. *If* something happened to the capture, I’d have a chance to get data off cards. So the cards are a backup to the capture. (Well, this was before I got the 4 16GBs.)

Yeah, I was aware of the charging issue, but the “cold boot” issue seems like it could be a tad annoying. Maybe the warning voltage warning for being on adapter could be modified below that “cold boot” voltage level….
On the one-slot AC/charger, my thoughts were: I’m usually on sticks, so keep the battery mounted (but’s cam’s on AC), it’s ready for the handhelds, turn cam off during breaks & lunch, so it’s charging. For longer no-AC days I’ve already got some old (recelled) ProPacs and an older charger. When not shooting I use the camera as a “feeder” to my NLE, so it can sit battery mounted, AC in, mostly in a charge-state.
Mostly I just loved the idea of a cam-mounted AC adapter. HOWEVER, I think if I want more LiON batteries (aka Dionic), I’ll buy one from a non-AB vendor for about 30% less (with it’s own charger in that price).

Are you going with the AB Titan 70? (It’s charger/adapter that “lives” on the Gold Plate… really small & light – no AC adapter to trip over.) I ordered the combo deal of Dionic 90 & Titan 70. Unfortunately, the TItan is due to arrive this Monday, so can’t give feedback (yet) as to how I like the concept.
I’ve got some recelled ProPacs & another charger, so the Titan & VERY lightweight Dionic 90 was a good choice for me for “run n’ gun” setups. Always have the Propacs to fall back on.“Constituo, ergo sum”
