Is firewire transfer option just as good as the PCMI transfer option?
Is the firewire option just as good as the PCMI slot? I plan on shooting 1080pa and know the files sizes would be high, what would give me a better transfer rate? And would I lose anything with the firewire from the p2 cards as opposed to transfering from the p2 cards into the PCMI slot?

Awesome, guess I dont have to trade in my ibook for a powerbook, and can use firewire as opposed to the PCMI slots which I dont have, nor do I need to buy a card reader! Party time!

Downside on 1394 is that it “downs” the camera for the duration of transfer. Fine if you’re not shooting past card capacity… serious issue if you are.

PCMCIA is potentially significantly faster. On my laptop I can transfer an 8GB card in about 5 minutes, a 16GB card in about 9 minutes. Firewire transfer isn’t quite that fast. FW800 through a PCD20 slot reader would be, but regular firewire from the camera isn’t as fast.
And as Bob points out, when using firewire transfer you have to tie up the camera to do it, whereas with PCMCIA transfer you don’t have to tie up the camera.

Your right Barry, That is important to keep in mind. What would be the best laptop with a PCMI slot? Can I use a PC laptop or does it have to be a Mac Powerbook of some sort? Thanks!

PC…Mac…doesn’t matter. As long as they have a PCMCIA slot and the P2 card drivers installed. On the first shoot we did, we had a Sony Vaio on set. The second shoot, a Powerbook.

I have been following the P2 threads anticipating getting a new camera. Correct me if I quess wrong… So you do need a computer to download the p2 camera or cards. The camera will not power and load a firewire drive all by itself??

Yes, the camera will offload directly to a certain type of external 1394 drive (says in the manual what 1394 type). However, 1] it is slower than using PCMCIA transfers 2] you end up with a bunch of NONAME folders in a bunch of drive partitions (confusing) 3] the camera can’t do anything else while transferring (that’s a biggie) 4] you can’t view clips & take selects.
