We haven’t actually assembled it yet so maybe it will be a nonissue. I’ve got a box full of HGST drives in front of me right now and the enclosure should arrive tomorrow. Some of the Amazon reviews for these HGST drives say they are fantastic but can be a little noisy. And I figure after a few hours of putting the RAID under load while working 4k footage, the fans will start pushing some decent air.

Good to know about the adapters. Since the RAID is technically TB3, we weren’t sure if a Thunderbolt 2 cable would work with it.

I’ve also been reading that optical TB3 cables are supposed to be released very soon, and that should provide some longer cable lengths.

Haha, how’d you find out? Please give me at least a day before you call the police. I need to time to cover everything with bleach.

Derek is my roommate. We share the same system and this machine auto logs into my account. So I’m guessing he posted without thinking about it. Now I’m wondering what else he’s posted on my behalf!!

We built a small post production studio in the 3rd bedroom of our place. Sometimes rough VO needs to be recorded in there and so we were wondering about putting the RAID in the closet, for sound purposes. It is my understanding that although RAID 5 with six 7200RPM drives will be super fast, we still won’t ever reach a read/write speed fast enough to fill up even 1/2 of the 40Gbps bandwidth of TB3. So dropping the bandwidth from 40Gbps to 20Gbps to get some more distance between our main computer and the drive bay would still yield the same performance, yet be provide a quieter work environment that allows for VO recording.

    Hope that makes sense.

  • Isn’t the CalDigit TS4 a software based RAID system whereas the Promise Pegasus is a hardware based RAID? I don’t know a ton about RAID, so I’m not sure if one is superior to the other, but that might be something to take into consideration when choosing a system.

  • I have a 2011 iMac i7 with 32 GB of RAM. I have edited a few commercials with 4k Red Epic footage using Premiere WITHOUT the Mercury Engine. It works fine but you have to drop the res to 1/8th the quality to playback okay. I imagine the 5K will edit 4k footage okay.

The current problem with the iMacs (which has ALWAYS been a problem) is that they use mobile graphics cards. The AMD cards used in the new iMacs are mobile class graphics cards. Apple uses mobile graphics cards because they are cheaper, generate less heat and they can cram them into a smaller enclosure. The svelte thinness of those iMacs come at a cost.

That being said, I’ve always been able to make things work and I still edit 4k Red Epic footage on my 2011 17″ Macbook Pro hooked up to a USB 2 drive.

August 19, 2014 at 9:34 pm in reply to: Premiere CC 2014 update constant freezes and crashes

Premiere CC 2014 has been almost unusable for me. After a couple years of stellar performance by both CS 6 and Premiere CC, I have to say Premiere CC 2014 is a COMPLETE DISASTER. It freezes and crashes on me constantly. On large projects I have to restart the program every 5 minutes. I have isolated the problem to the application itself as I have had this same issue on multiple computers with different footage and different hard drives. I am using all newish Macs (2012 and up), with quad core i7 processors, a minimum of 32 GB of memory and ultra fast hard drives (some thunderbolt/7200 RPM and some RAID). DO NOT INSTALL PREMIERE CC 2014!!!! STAY AWAY FOR NOW!!!

  • I tried the “New Title Based on Current”, which is nice. Unfortunately, on a Mac, you cannot right click a title clip and select “Replace with Clip From Bin”. It is grayed out. So I have to drag the title to the timeline and apply the transitions to the ends for every single title.

I really wish you could right click on a title clip in the timeline, select something like “New Title Based on Selected Title”, change it, and then have that reflected immediately on the clip you selected in the timeline. Having to redrag everything from the bin to the timeline 1,000 times and apply transitions for each clip is rather annoying.

    –UPDATE–

I got the “Replace Clip from Bin” to work. I misunderstood and didn’t realize you have to have the clip selected in the bin AND the clip selected in the timeline before you right click and select “Replace Clip from Bin”.

Thank you so much. This saves me a lot of time!

Thank you everyone for the help! I hate buying into a dying technology and I want to make the smartest decision I can make.

Walter, just curious… does the IO LA act as a breakout box for your Kona 2? I’m confused as to how it works in conjunction with an HD card.

Actually, I HAVE to purchase an SD card because my dual 1.8 GHZ is not PCIe. That means I’d have to buy a whole new G5 again. I don’t have the money for that right now and frankly I’d rather not build my HD system until the new intel Powermacs come out and the new Final Cut Pro is shipping. For now, I need to buy a decent SD card.

Any recommendations? IO LA, Kona LS?

October 13, 2005 at 5:55 am in reply to: Compressing 24p

I have tried everything and I cannot get a single compression program to export this file.
The official information of the file is as follows:
    ————————————————
    Format:
    DVCPRO HD vout 720p60 imdc, 720 x 480, Millions
16-bit Integer (Big Endian), Stereo, 48.000 kHz

    FPS: 23.98

    Data Size:
    1.41 GB

    Data Rate:
    47.60 mbits/sec

    Duration:
    00:04:15:12

    Size:
    720 X 480 pixels
    ————————————————

I need to compress it into a Windows Media File or a Real Player File.
I got Sorenson Squeeze to compress it into a Real Player file but no matter what I do it won’t include sound!

    HEEELLLPPPPP!!!!!!!!
