I have six EX1r’s and love them dearly.

I like to reformat the card after each project as a rule. I do All Clips Delete while on the same project but feel that reformatting is good.

  • I use the same card reader and it is much faster than than that. I use Clip Browser with the data check on and it is about 1/2 hour. I also use an eFilm SDHC card reader and the Sony is much faster than that.

I know this does not solve your problem but it at least confirms you have one.

Try using Clip Browser and just hit “copy all”. Try it with data check “on” and “off” although I don’t recommend using it regularly with data check off.

  • On the Sony web site there is a whole section on XDCam workflow for FCP. I do not have the link for it. Also, on this forum alone there are multiple threads about how to get XDCam into FCP.

My point really is that you really can’t expect to be able to do it correctly without instructions.

  • Yes…download and read the instructions for the Sony XDCAM EX1.

  • You need to read the instructions for use for the EX1. It is very simple but it won’t work if you don’t know how to do it.

What does the audio look like on the meters on the LCD screen? You should be able to tell the difference between good audio and static just by looking at it. They should look exactly the same.

I can’t imagine anything that could happen in the transfer that would affect the audio. If you are doing clip browser or transfer to a back-up hard drive and then importing your files to your NLE that should not be causing the problem.

I would say that Craig and Michael are correct that you were not monitoring the radio mic with the headphones. There is a selectable menu option for audio output which I find confusing.

I strongly suggest reading the directions. Being a guy I do not usually do this but in this case it is VERY important to use the correct workflow. Many people get frustrated with the XDCam format because they do not do it correctly.

I personally use XDCam Clip Browser to make a complete copy of my card to an internal drive on my MacPro by using “copy all” and the CRC check function. I then use XDCam transfer to put my files on my server or use Final Cut Pro to import the back-ups off the internal drive.

    Please read the directions.

Thanks for asking. It was a miserable failure but fortunately it did not matter. I just hit the S&Q button and shot away. Being a guy (and busy) I did not read the directions until about halfway through and realized I was doing it wrong. I was shooting the same thing with another cam so I could mess it up. I will have to practice some more before the next time.
