I am using 3 EX1R’s and am very happy with them. I am using 32 GB Transcend SDHC cards with eFilm adapters. I get 117 min of recording time with them at 1920×1080 60i. I don’t overcrank so I have no experience with that. I can ingest directly into my MacBook Pro using the Express34 slot but I don’t because my external hard drives are connected to that. I have been ingesting just using a Verbatim USB2 card reader which I am sure is not the best way. I would like a couple of the Sony devices but I think they are USB2 also so I am not sure how much faster they would be. There does not seem to be a eSata or FW800 device available for this.
I am not sure what you are editing with but I would consider borrowing or renting an EX1R before buying and playing with the workflow before you actually need to do it. It can be a little tricky. I would not want to learn it under the crunch of a deadline.
My two cents…

Did you try the manuals for XDCam Transfer? I found them to be VERY enlightening.

Call Rule Broadcast in Boston 617 277-2200. They will ship one to you overnight.

Weird…I couldn’t figure out how to use XDCam Transfer either until I read the manual. XDCam Transfer is not all that intuitive…but the manual is.

July 21, 2010 at 12:17 pm in reply to: EX3 – importing multiple files (shots) as one long file?I just finished editing my first full project with footage shot from my EX1R. It was about three minutes and had about 50 original clips. It was really a breeze to import them into FCP in one project. Granted, the clips have random names but they are all in the order you shot them and have thumbnails that you can look at. It could be considered one long clip that you imported from tape. You could put the whole thing in the timeline if you were more comfortable that way.
With a longer more complicated you may want to do a rough edit, rename the clips and dump the clips you know you will never use.
Honestly I found it to be quite intuitive and really seemed to save me a lot of time. Try it…you’ll like it.

I just bought 3 EX1R and am purchasing 3 more soon. They are $6,299.00 which is the price Sony requires them to be sold at. I purchased mine through Rule Broadcast/Boston Camera in Boston. My suggestion to you would be to purchase it from a reputable dealer in your area. I love B and H and purchase things from the weekly because of their great prices and unbelievable delivery. But on a camera purchase I would prefer to buy from a person in a building that I can physically bring the product to if I have a problem. If the price is the same why not.
I need to have the software updated on my cameras. Rule has offered me a loaner for the time that it takes my camera to be updated. I don’t think B and H would do that.
Also, some people say that for the extra money the EX3 is more flexible than the EX1. It was not necessary for me but you might want to consider that.

I do not believe there is a device that will allow you to import SxS into a MacBook 15″ that is not USB. I am trying to use the Sonnet Qio multi card ingest device with my 17″ through eSata with little success. I have also tried using the Qio with my brand new MacPro but it does not support 64bit. It is useless.
Oddly, I can’t use the Express 34 slot in my 17″ MacBook for direct ingest because I am already using it for my eSata external hard drives.
That being said, I am using 32GB SDHC cards with my EX1R and using an old Verbatim card reader for ingest and I don’t find it “painfully” slow. I think it could be better but I don’t believe the device exists yet.
Someone needs to step up and invent a FW800 SxS card reader.

I did it using Microsoft Live Meeting just recently.

The EX1R is selectable DV or HDV.

The outputs on my EX1R are a little funky. There are only so many digital outputs. I do not know if it the same on the EX1 but you have to enable iLink through the menu function. Unfortunately this disables the rest of the digital outputs such as HDMI. Have you done this?
