I think they are just doing what they can to kill off Sorenson in favor of h264. But Sorenson doesn’t have h264’s color weirdness where it’s always washed-out. And Sorenson works better with programs that deal with quicktime files on a frame-by-frame basis, I’ve found.

Does this work in Lion? I just tried it and have not recovered Sorenson, Motion JPEG A, or others that I like.

Do I need to do something else? I tried restarting.

    Thanks

I have the legacy encoders enabled, but there still is no 10-bit or ProRes.

And I don’t know what gave you the idea that I like h264… I personally have had nothing but trouble with its washed-out color infidelity.

Is it pretty self-evident how to do it with Compressor? I haven’t used that for years, back when it never worked on my G5. However I think it will work on my iMacs.

I have FCP 6.0.6, part of Final Cut Pro Studio 2 I think. Also, I’m pretty sure I have quicktime pro — how could I tell? The Quicktime Player 7 “about” dialog logo has a ‘pro’ on it. Also it says ‘Pro Apps User’ in the Registration Box.

The Registration Box did not have any information in it, however. I copied the registration info from another pro-enabled machine, but it didn’t seem to make any difference.

I have another machine, an older G5, which does have the 10-bit codec, I guess I will just use that. I was trying to use a more recent iMac with Snow Leopard, which seems to be anti-anything-but-h264.

Oh, I did of course! But it would be nice to know how you set the “default folder”. Or is it always someplace like Documents?

I do see a checkbox for use Default Folder, but I don’t see any place where you can see what it is or change it to something else! :O

I’d love to use H.264 but in 5 years or so I’ve never been able to figure out how to get it to reproduce colors correctly. They are always pretty far off, washed out and lighter than the original. It is a shame because it is all Apple will tolerate anymore, pretty much. You would think they would have addressed the problem by now.

I tried setting to Draft, but the quicktime it exports adds another level of pixelation. The movie does not look like the canvas does in ‘Draft’ mode — it is much lower resolution. Anyone know another way to do this?
