  • Update: A simple reboot expanded the box. Not all the way, but enough for me to see the regions button to click it. The “go” button is still hiding behind the radio buttons, but I can click the edge of it to start the renders. Good enough for now. Still a mystery, though. I wonder if with this new laptop, I’m missing a smaller or scalable system font that is intended to be in that part of the dialog box instead of what appears to be a default Arial font.

  • Update: I figured out how to use keyboard commands to toggle & select radio buttons, so I was able to “blindly” select the regions button & it seems to be working. That said, I’d prefer to be able to see what I’m doing, obviously.

  • OK, I guess I should have thought of this. I’m so used to editing for TV. So if I know this will be played primarily off of a laptop, I should get it looking exactly how I want it to look in Vegas, then use the Computer RGB to Studio RGB preset in Levels applied to the whole project when I render…and then the rendered file should look the same in a media player as the project looks in Vegas?

And let me get this straight… If for any reason I bring that rendered file back into Vegas (which I sometimes have to do), it will look darker, correct? So if I want to render a file for the sake of bringing it back into Vegas (so all the effects & other time- & processor-intensive elements are pre-rendered), I should NOT apply the Studio RGB levels yet, correct? Only for the final output, and only if it is intended for computer viewing?

Hope that all made sense, but I think I’m getting it. My head hurts, though. Thanks!

[Wayne Waag] “Yes. Here is a script written by Gilles. Events to be grouped must be on the top 2 tracks. You can add additional tracks if you want.”

Eureka – it works! This is a super easy & quick workaround. Better than chasing gremlins. Thank you!

[Graham Bernard] “OK, need some more info: Type Media and your Project settings for that Media.

These are usually MOV files from a Canon 6D, often mixed with MTS files from a Panasonic HMC 150. (Though the issue occurs even if I don’t mix media.) Project settings are set to be whatever the clips are.

(Update: Solved, kinda. See reply to Wayne below.)

[Graham Bernard] “Is it at all possible you have the “U” keyboard shortcut remapped to something else?

I doubt it, because I don’t know how to map shortcuts, and “U” still ungroups events whenever I need it to. And again, these portions of clips (usually the back half or so out of all of them) are immediately ungrouped the instant I bring them into a new timeline, before I even touch the keyboard.

Vegas does generate the .scc files, so I’ll certainly submit those as well & see if the station takes it. I haven’t encoded in those other formats yet. I can try a small section just to see what happens when I bring it back into Vegas. One of my questions is – what SHOULD happen? (Which someone more familiar with CC can hopefully answer.) Are the embedded orange markers enough to show that the CC’s are there? Even if they don’t show on the video preview window? Maybe they’re only supposed to show when they’re being edited? Incidentally, when I run the script to “promote” the markers, the original blue editable ones pop back up where the orange ones are & then I can see the captions in preview. So it seems like those rendered files should have SOMETHING in them. I’m afraid it’s all guesswork until I send these to the station & hear back from them. My client just doesn’t have time for us to go back & forth, so I was hoping someone might be familiar with these CC issues.

Thanks, Steve. I do have it installed, and I see that that codec is “exempt” from having to be 50 Mbps. It didn’t pop up as a template under Quicktime templates, but I selected the 3Mbps template & tweaked all the settings, then chose the DNxHD codec for rendering. So we’ll see. However, there’s still the same issue of it not giving me an option to save project markers. Is that Sony tutorial even accurate about that part? And I have no idea if it’s going to keep the CC data embedded or how to test it.

Good call – the firmware update fixed it! That’s normally the first thing I check, not sure why it didn’t cross my mind this time. Good to know it wasn’t a software issue. Thanks!

October 21, 2008 at 1:55 pm in reply to: DVDA 5.0 estimated size & bitrate oddity

That’s what I finally did. I know that’s the ideal workflow anyway, and come to think of it, it shouldn’t add that much rendering time overall. I was just trying to take advantage of DVDA 5.0’s capabilities, and it frustrated me to see one of its basic features not working. (I’m really surprised that no one else on this board is concerned about the “trim” feature not working – what’s the point of even having it??? Maybe no one uses it.) Anyway, thanks…
