I would use color curves in this case since the subject is clearly a much darker tone than the rest of the image. The trick is in determining where the right tones are located on the curve. I determine this by making a snapshot which I then load into Photoshop. Photoshop has a curves function which will quickly tell me where on the curve a particular tone is located.

I used Alienwares (desktop and portable) several years back. Both wound up in the trash due to very poor support from the company. My first Alienware included life time support, and was well supported. It’s too bad that they lost that.

I don’t know. I do color correction in Vegas with the Color Corrector and Color Curves. Color Corrector has its uses and can sometimes produce dramatic results. I have begun to stress Color Curves recently, and have found it to be very powerful. One of the tricks is to figure out where on the tonal range a correction needs to be made. Another is to know whether you want to adjust primary colors or complementary colors, and whether you want to increase or reduce luminance. I’m not, at this point seeing any need to resort to something like Premiere for color correction. I’m not seeing what it can do that Vegas cannot do.

You cannot open an SVP12 veg file in versions 10 or 11. You can do all the work you want in 10/11, and open that veg file in SVP12. You can continue to open the veg in 10/11 as long as you do not save it in SVP12.

Since the sound is correct after rendering, I would render to a wav file, and then import and use the wav file in your Vegas project.

That sounds like something I recently received an answer on, but, unfortunately, I am not at home to refresh my memory on the correct switches. I’ll try anyway. If you right click on the video and select switches, there are two switches which need to be set. I think one is the interlace setting, and the other is definitely to force a resample. This fixed my problem in Vegas 12, but I did not check to see if it fixes the problem in earlier versions.

You need to tell us more about the computer. Stuttering usually indicates that the computer is a bit underpowered. It should help if you reduce the quality of the preview window.

I learned Vegas and audio from Jeff Fisher who assisted Douglas Spotted Eagle when Spot gave seminars in the Chicago area, and taught audio at the College of DuPage. Jeff was adamant that all power must be turned off before connecting firewire devices because the design of the firewire connector makes it easy to blow the port.
Until you find a computer that can communicate with your firewire devices, I think you have to assume that their ports are blown. That said, I did have a firewire hub that I had used on an XP machine that turned out to be bad when it was used on Win 7. It functioned, but very poorly. Replacing it resolved several problems including poor performance on some external hard drives.
