  • There is a gamma shift when you go to or from Apple’s DV codec and RGB. Apple did this so that DV format video, when viewed on a Mac computer monitor, would look more like it does on a TV or PC which have a different gamma than Mac monitors. If you use another DV codec, such as AVID, you don’t have this problem.

[toke lahti] “So far solid state memory in a long run has doubled its capasity and halved its price in 18 months. “

Actually more than that at least for the SD memory that is at the heart of P2 cards. One year ago 1GB SD cards came out at $499. Today you can get one on sale for $65.

April 19, 2005 at 3:32 pm in reply to: The Perfect Mpeg2

    Their recommendations are basically

    “MPEG2 4:2:0 Program Stream

    Video Bit Rate 7500kb/s
Audio Mpeg layer 2 384 kbps”

That is more data than most DVD’s use, but since this is supposed a way to send TV commercials for presumably broadcast use, you would want the higher bitrates.

If you do not need to have your videos broadcast this is more than overkill… even their recommendations for preview movies are a little bit more than you need for good web movies.

Cleaner for Mac has a lousy MPEG2 encoder for the most part. Using BitVice or Megapeg.X for encoding and MPEG Streamclip to multiplex it would give you a much, much better quality MPEG2.

Hard drives have become very cheap and at some point we will have high-capacity DVD’s that will let us stores lots of data on optical disks.

I wonder if that should be USB-P2 and if it’s a way to transfer from P2 cards via USB???

I have read that Real 8 and Real G2 are loosely based on Intel’s Indeo Video Interactive (IVI) interframe codec, but Real has done so much development work since the 90’s that who knows what’s under the hood now.

April 8, 2005 at 10:50 pm in reply to: firewire+ intercom for multicamera operation

I know the system you’re talking about: it’s the sprint DV – https://www.unitcine.com/sprint/ – $1295 per camera and uses analog video, which is fine for a live shoot when you’re feeding things into a mixer (they feed everything through Ethernet cable).

If you can’t justify that cost, you can do it for about $75 per camera:

I have done multi-camera shoots with DV camcorders and we basically just used the longest s-video cables we could find. A 100′ s-video cable is less than $US50 and for intercoms, about $50 buys you a pair of those little FRS radios with VOX (voice operated transmit, so you don’t need to push buttons to talk).
