    Hi Frank,

    Doesn’t sound good.
Recommended procedure for connected computers (mac or pc) to firewire is to have BOTH devices off for connection and disconnection.
This is especially true for Avid systems and more especially for Avid Mojo.

I NEVER connect a camera to a powered system with the camera power on.

In most instances, I have the camera connected to the compuer with power off. Power up pc and after boot up, I turn on cmaera, wait for camera to be recognized and then start work.
A little more time, but it works.

I would suggest you tyr this procedure on a computer you know works with other firewire devices to take the mac out of the equation and then follow this procedure with your camera.
If it stil does not work, then I am afraid you may have a broekn firewire port on your camera

    hope this helps

    Hi,

I have an XLH1 and shoot HDV and edit mainly in SD.
    The camera is nice except:

    1. The supplied lens is not a serious proposition because of its infinite focus, making faultless live shoots very hard. I use my Canon 16 x Manual lens. Did test on resolution and no worries. The HD 20 x is about a stop faster though.

    2. The viewfinder has always been a worry on the XLs. Besides resolution, my mainb gripe is the fact we NEVER see the actual edge of the frame we are shooting. You need a field monitor with underscan to do this.

    3. Despite asking since the XL1, the mangement of audio is still a problem. It is still not possible to feed the on camera mic to just once of the inputs and feed a signal from one of the rear inputs AT THE SAME TIME. This is a STANDARD professional workflow.

    4. To have a trouble free capture, I have found best to digitize from the camera. It will wotk form a ceap Sony HDv camera, but of course the 25F will only play from the Canon.Unnecessary wear on expensive heads really.

Besides ALL that, I am happy.

I think the price has been fixed worldwide and dealers limited.

    cheers

    Hi there,

We did some test with a proper colour chart and a resolution chart.
We performed test with Standard new 20 x lens for XLH1; The Canon 16x and Canon 14x lenses that I bought for use on my XL1, XL1s and XL2.
We recorded in HDV with 50i, f1 and f2 modes.
We viewed HD images on a JVC DT-V1910CGE HD CRT monitor and Dell 2405 LCD and Sony 1440 for downconverted SD images via Matrox Axio.

Here’s a quick summary of what we found.

The 20 x is a more sensitive than the other lenses.
The 20 x has marginally less than the 16x
The 14x has less resolution than the other 2 and probably should only be used in SD mode.

There was less resolution on the right hand side of the picture than the left on all 3 lenses on all monitors.

Besides the sensitivity, it appeared the 16x was slighly “blue” in colour balance compared to 20x.

Good news for me is I can use my 16x on the XLH1, but the 20 x is a really good lens (except forits electronic focus).

Still waiting for any comments on the “definitive answer on SDI out”

Without a doubt, the Matrox Axio is a pretty compelling system.
Sure it costs more, but when you add the costs of all the otehr things you need with any proper HD system, it is not that bad.
The storage is the killer, but you can skimp if you are not uncompressed HD.

Matrox implemetation of Premeire Pro is great on the Axio and on the DV only RTX100.
It’s a bit like cruise control and power windows. Once you use it it’s hard to go back to the native PPro editing.

  • Hi,
Is the Iris on the lens or on the camera?

If on camera, have they imporoved the “steppiness”. I find it very hard to do a live Iris ride on XL2.

    cheers

    Thanks Peter,
    You are spot on.
We cleaned both the gold contacts )which were only a little bit dirty) and the connection between the lens and the camera (which was filthy).
I suppose I should have relaised that things get dirty with use and need cleaning.
    Thanks again Peter.

  • Hi Craig,

I have noticed a couple of funnies with edl import.
Say you have an edl that has been edited from one reel.
PPro imports the edl (CMX from FCP or Avid), puts all the clips on the timeline, but only gives you one clip in the project bin (the clip from the start of the first clip to end code on last clip.
This is long time. Typically for a TVC you would shoto 30 mins for a 30 sec TVC, and wehen you come to online you have to capture basically the whole 30 mins.
Any work around you know of.
    cheers
