  • Timecode issue. I want to load in Avid and edit in premiere.

Posted by Daniel Martinez on June 20, 2005 at 1:38 pm

My director shot her film on video (DV-CAM) and we are going to edit it in Adobe Premiere Pro.

Is there any way to import clips that where logged and loaded on another editing platform, and still have the logging info (timecodes, reel name, clip name – ect.)?

What I would like to do is to take my external firewire disk to my work and load the material there via final cut pro or avid. Then bring my disk back home and use the clips in Adobe Premiere Pro.

Now, will the timecode show in Adobe Premiere Pro? Will clips loaded with Adobe Premiere Pro show it’s timecode in Final Cut Pro or Avid? Or are still to reload our material via an EDL evry time we swap platform?

To simplify my questio: Is there a uncompressed video-format with build in timecode and reel name that all systems read and understand?

    Thanks a lot.

Your source files as already captured should contain the original timecode. Easy enough to check that 1st.

It should be no problem to take those files into another system and the timecode will be retained.

Your problem might be getting the logging info from one system to the next. I do not think a batch capture log will cross platforms across applications but I might be wrong and a CSV file may help.

I have found EDL import in Premiere to work fine but others have had problems with drop frame and non drop frame. ( I work in PAL so no issues for me)

Swapping platforms regularly might cause problems (I would suggest)

Automatic Duck will allow you to do what you want but it’s not cheap.

    Hi Craig,

I have noticed a couple of funnies with edl import.
Say you have an edl that has been edited from one reel.
PPro imports the edl (CMX from FCP or Avid), puts all the clips on the timeline, but only gives you one clip in the project bin (the clip from the start of the first clip to end code on last clip.
This is long time. Typically for a TVC you would shoto 30 mins for a 30 sec TVC, and wehen you come to online you have to capture basically the whole 30 mins.
Any work around you know of.
    cheers
