I may be wrong, but i thought there was a way to “recapture” from mxf. Look around at other forums just to make sure i am or am not dreaming.

FCP doesnt treat EDL’s like that. you cant relink an edl to any existing media. it renames all the clips based on (of all things) event and reel numbers, or something like that
FCP DOES allow you to Import an edl, and recapture the media with handle.
thats it, even then people have had problems with dissolves and suchtry this:
import the edl into fcp, recapture 3 or 4 shots from one reel, and see how the shots line up. it should work fine, with maybe a 1 frame error or so. If after the test you are still getting 12 and 17 second offsets, then you have a bigger problem, like tapes captured across time code breaks, or some drop frame – non drop frame mismatch
Apple never meant for EDL Import to do nothing more than make a timeline and clips to be recaptured, much to many peoples chagrin.
and I know what you said about Automatic Duck, but to do what you want its the only way. Maybe someone on the forum who has it would let you run your work through it, for a nominal fee.
hope this helps

hey joe
why?
AE is a so much better compositing and layering tool than FCP.
Just do all that work in AE, and, if your result is going to be full frame, render out movies that match your timeline.
If your result needs to be keyed over other video, render out as a quicktime animation with alpha channel, OR Microcosm has a free codec called None 16, thats smaller and better than animation.
example: subject on green screen.
1. Captured footage (dvcproHD 30 progressive) into FCP.
2. edited out junk, and strung together good shots,
3. exported cut timeline using None16 codec, and copied over to AE workstation, in this case a PC.
4. AE artist pulled a key (i think using keylight) and cleaned it up, matting out gobo arms and such.
5. AE artist renders out his timeline as none 16 with alpha.
5. I use the none 16 with alpha movie as a layer in a simple 3 layer compositing timeline.
6. we would have done the whole thing in AE, but we needed to time out the simple comp in FCP, while pulling the key in AE (not enough time in the budget)
honestly, figure out what you want to do with the goal of “heavy compositing lifting” in AE. You will save yourself so much grief!

hey paul
i dont know how much of your comment this addresses, but one thing i would like to see, and the guy spearheading this committee has said so as well, is a form of “time coding” that address variable frame rate acquisition, both digitally and photographically ie film, so when you shoot over-crank or under-crank , you have an accurate index of the media, so when my overcranked dailies come back at 24, and i want to re transfer at 30, or 60, i dont have to calculate all the offsets!
as an analogy, like a flag in the code that sez “i was shot at 300 fps” and this gets translated to the same values all the time, regardless of transfer or copying speed
sounds somewhat selfish i know, but what the heck?

oh yeah! (russias like 5 1/2 feet!)
so does that mean they had fatter horses? or maybe horses with fatter a**es?
btw there is a train that runs from paris to madrid, i think, and when it reaches the border, they Literally pick up each car off of the european gauge wheels, and put them on the spanish guage wheels. With passengers aboard! at night!
kinda like a teranex!

we do that workflow all the time. HDV to either dvcpro hd or dvcpro 50.
we play out of the deck component analog, and capture using a kona LH
HDV is compact in terms of file size, BUT it does not seem to do as much in realtime, and it seems to take longer to render effects and such.
Plus, when its time to print to tape, even an HDV tape, there is this conforming process that takes quite some time.
Even though DVCPROHD takes up more drive space, its a more agile format to edit with, and it looks fine.
a 1 TB fw800 drive can easily handle the footage. you should be able to play it no problem, AND 900 minutes takes up 733 gB.
hope this helps

funny being that your at a tv station 🙂
you actually answered your own question: why not make NTSC 30 instead of 29.97? cuz in less than 4 months there will be no NTSC.
NTSC is an analog standard. Basically the digital standard aka ATSC sez you can transmit in any frame rate you want cuz the receivers are made to handle it!
so its more like, is the NBC Network Feed 1080i 29.97 or 1080i 30?
how about ABC at 720p? 29.97? 30.00? 60.00?
dont blame SMPTE, point a nice big “shame on you finger” at Sony and Panasonic! they got us into this mess!
Dont get me wrong, i am right there with you on this front! i hate all this 29.97 23.95 whatever the f***!!!
btw, i read a blog somewhere about why railroad tracks are 4 and 3/4 feet wide. It goes back to the first roman road, as that was the wheel width of the carts, which were made that wide to accomadate two horses side by side, or 2 horses a””es!
some things just do not change!
It will be some va

the “ghost” is on a drive, preferably one just like the system drive.
so its a backup, and i would still want to have a backup of my project info etc, so i would still get a drive for the internal slot.
so now you have 4, System, Secondary, Ghost, and Backup
yeah its 4 drives but they are so cheap right now.
and please, as far as ghost goes, do not make any decisions based on waht i say as i do not know much about it (enough to be dangerous)
Seriously, go the the norton web site and look into it. google norton and you will find it!

Have you ever found a way to Really get the “organize into folders” shut off? I use itunes for music conversion a lot, and i hate having to go through all these “unknown artist, unkown album” folders that itunes makes even when you set the preferences not too.
One thing that has helped is to NOT search the internet for albums and title info. At least that way I only get one or 2 “unknown artist” folders
