Hey Mike
WE export out of compressor a DV with an AVI wrapper, which seems to give fine results. Another choice besides Sheer is a codec called None16, which i think is by Digital Anarchy. Its free, and is cross platform
hope this helps

Hey
Little late to the game, buuuut
EBAY!!!
find yourself a BVU 800. the most reliable and stable 3/4 VTR made. If your tapes are Regular U MAtic, (as opposed to SP) it will handle the tapes nicely
AND
You should’nt just look for any tbc, but a Fortel TBC. They had special circuitry designed to do Time base correction on the 3/4 video signal after converting from “color under”, which was a limitaion of the format and caused rapid generation loss, even over one or 2 gen’s.
Using the BVU800 to play back the tapes, and feeding the TBC via the Dub Out, will give you the best possible reproduction of the video signal. THe Fortel should have an S video out as well as Composite Video. By feeding the S video into a Digitbeta, BetaSP, or Capture Card, you avoid the signal becoming encoded, and preserve the quality even further.
and i would go to a Digital tape format, either DVCPro50 or Digibeta,
DVcam would be a bit of a loss.BTW, there a quite a few “Video Cleanup” plugins for FCP. If the video is really bad, those can help.
hope this helps
ironically, this gear would have set you back 20 to 40 grand back-in-the-day, but you can probably assemble the whole kit for 2 to 3 grand.
They usually go under the name Fortel Turbo.

thanx thanx and triple thanx!
I am running 5.1.4 on 10.4.11, 2×2.66 dual core intel, 4gB ram.
The project consists of a lot of clips at DV50, some at 8 bit uncompressed, and a dozen at HDV.
Synopsis: FCP Proj was open, and was doing After Effects CS2, when i got a General Error, and all the HDV clips went offline. A Search and Data rescue of the media drives turned up nothing (they just dis-a-peered)
and when i tried to reconnect i got the ol ‘”” is missing’ prompt.so i started to recapture the clips, but instead of nameing the clips what they were named, the clips all got named after the project, with a number at the end ie instead of “ClipName1” each clip was named “Project Name 1”, “Project name 2” and so on.
and twice the app just quit! poof!
various things i tried were to open an earlier version of the show from autosave (still got the “”is missing)
saved as a new version, closed all the bins but 2 (had 10 bins open prior) and re targeted my render and thumbnail drives.finally got it all together, and am now following everyones advice in cleaning up
BTW, I was not really doing any sort of regular maintenance, maybe a permission rebuild once a week, and restarting every day.

out of any of the EDL formats, the CMX 3600 will give you 8 place alpha numeric reel names, but that is the biggest you will see. EDL’s just dont make a lot of room for reel names.
What usually happens is you will get substitutions, with an legend of the subs at the top of the list, ususally something like “Reel BobsBigDog1 has been replaced with 000008”
to make it less random, you could rename all the necessary reels your self to something that will get carried through, in the case of a CMX 3600 EDL, you have 8 charachters
hope this helps

I know of one show……nothing big really….only the top rated show on food network….Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Cut on FCP from start to finish.

tends to be a little commercial, but have found good nuggets there
Mostly about PC’s, but still a great place for all things DVD, SuperCD, MPEG1,2,4 et al:

“Sigh. Guess that makes me an old man.”
Not really
I read in a trade mag that laser pacific still uses their linear bay for finishing.
For a show thats mostly fades and cuts its still a faster way to conform than having to digitize into an NLE, then play out.
Gee, so i guess sometimes newer isnt always better?
