January 16, 2009 at 4:25 amSounds like a render file issue on the green slug. Try trashing the render files, close final cut. Use FCP rescue to trash FC prefs, run disk utility to repair permissions, shut down the mac dot ten seconds, launch project then rerender. You may want to duplicate the file and launch from that. Usually when I do all that the funky stuff is fixed, or I know I’m really screwed and I start saving the file every ten seconds.

Tell us a bit more about the machine and the editing you are doing. And most of all about what kind of maintenance do you make regularly to your Mac.
Cheers,

January 16, 2009 at 3:29 pmHey Bob.
Usually that means one or two things that I can tell anyway. Asher’s advice is good. I have also seen it when working with 8 bit material in 10bit space. What codec, frame rate and resolution are you working in?
It could also mean you have a piece of media that went south as well.
Start with the render files, and go from there.

January 16, 2009 at 7:19 pmthanx thanx and triple thanx!
I am running 5.1.4 on 10.4.11, 2×2.66 dual core intel, 4gB ram.
The project consists of a lot of clips at DV50, some at 8 bit uncompressed, and a dozen at HDV.
Synopsis: FCP Proj was open, and was doing After Effects CS2, when i got a General Error, and all the HDV clips went offline. A Search and Data rescue of the media drives turned up nothing (they just dis-a-peered)
and when i tried to reconnect i got the ol ‘”” is missing’ prompt.so i started to recapture the clips, but instead of nameing the clips what they were named, the clips all got named after the project, with a number at the end ie instead of “ClipName1” each clip was named “Project Name 1”, “Project name 2” and so on.
and twice the app just quit! poof!
various things i tried were to open an earlier version of the show from autosave (still got the “”is missing)
saved as a new version, closed all the bins but 2 (had 10 bins open prior) and re targeted my render and thumbnail drives.finally got it all together, and am now following everyones advice in cleaning up
BTW, I was not really doing any sort of regular maintenance, maybe a permission rebuild once a week, and restarting every day.

January 17, 2009 at 2:55 amBob, run DiskWarrior or TechTools.
When footage disappear I don’t think is an FC malfunction.
