If you have Premiere Elements 4 in a 32 bit system place the H264 mov files say 5 clips at a time probably less than 4GB, render the lot, and then Export to Movie as a Microsoft avi codec, uncompressed, and then Import into editing timeline in the other program,we were using Premiere Pro 1.5.1 the quality should be retained. A messy way but it works if you have the time.

To play safe you may need to open a new project each time and start again, the “running low on system memory” will disappear untill you exceed say 4Gb or less.

Note : I might add this has only happened since we started using the H264 Mov files from a Canon 5D mark II which are very big even for a 5 second clip, you need to work very slowly and do not add too many clips to the timeline, and save as you go or you will lose the lot.

Check out my previous comments re not using the Image Stablizer on a tripod.We use 25 fps Pal hand held 28-135 mm Canon IS lens and a Sandisk UDMA 45 Mbs card for most travel video without any problems.

May be best to change the H264mov codec to Microsoft avi , uncompressed and retain the quality, then Export to Movie off the timelineor direct to DVD, it works very well this end.

Nothing wrong with the 5d Mark II, but, if you go from 1920 x 1080 p to 720 x576 widescreen for a DVD then you will lose quality.

In Premiere Pro set the DVD Quality to high at 5 in the edit box and do a VBR 2 pass, the result we get is pretty good. ie., using the Adobe Media Main Concept Encoder built into the software.

Use HDMI for transfer of HDV to Sony Bravia TV. Do not use HDMI to capture only Firewire IEEE 1394A card. We have been using it for 3 years, no problems. Black striping the tape for indexing may help. You should read instructions to set up in manual or ask Canon ?

You must save timeline at finish of transcode and type in project and click “SAVE” And wait, if you have set it to automatically to record. That happens after you have captured the video off the firewire.

I forgot to say “defragment” daily …………………And the system is I7, I think the gaming machines may be overkill? The Dell I7 960 appears Ok but, Dell can custom build anything you want, check out the CS5 Premiere Pro System requirements ?You may need to go to 64 bit one day?

It was configured to suit CS5 System requirements, however, it is a Dell T5500 Precision Quad Core Xeon processor 2.27 Ghz with 12 Gb ram and 1,000 Gb hard drive basically for use with High definition editing.It is equipped with a NVIDIA FX 3800 which works very well with H264 codec even with Premiere Pro 1.5.1 but, there has been a minor problem when using Photoshop when it says” Display driver Nividia Windows Kernel Mode Driver Version 191.87 Stopped responding and has fully recovered”.259.12 Quadro -Win 64 bit has been installed by Dell and seems to have solved the problem. You will need a 64 bit system if you intend upgrading to CS5 Premiere Pro..
I too have a Dell Dimension 8400 Multi Processor 3.2Ghz Pentium with hyperthreading which does a resonable job still,but, is slow rendering. If you get hyperthreading on the Precision Workstation it could push the price up by $1,000 depending on the size of the processor.We mainly go to Pro tape HDV but, got a blu-ray burner included just in case.
The only reason we upgraded was to more effectively use the H264 mov. files from the Canon 5D Mark II 1920 x 1080 which slowed the Dell 8400 down.The Exported High definition editing to pro tape is broadcast quality from both , the Dell Dimension 8400 as well as the Dell Precision T5500.

Ps. As far as I know CS4 is not a 64 bit application and does not respond very well to the new Codecs like AVCHD and H264 mov, that is why I intend to upgrade shortly to Premiere Pro CS5. Your problem may be CS4 but, it should work better than my Premiere Pro 1.5.1 which is 5 years old and the Dell 8400 which is 5 years old as well. Try a restricted start up “msconfig”, as well as removing all temporary files from your computer by typing in %temp% in the Windows address bar, it may help.

Have Quad Core Dell Precision XEON T5500 2.26GHZ running a NVIDIA Quadro FX 3800 and no problems for High definition 1920 x 1080 Mov files even on the old Premiere Pro 1.5.1. a 32 bit application but, CS5 on 64 bit would be faster ???????????? Also, a Dell Dimension 3.2GHZ running a Radeon 125 mb Card and no problems. The sound appears better on the FX 3800 1GB Card and it appears 3 times faster on the Quad Core ? i thought the FX4800 was a Final Cut Pro card ?
