Frankly, this is disappointing from you. First, you’re missing out. Serving can be a very rewarding experience. Second, we’re lucky to have a good judicial system, and it is your duty as a citizen to support it.

I really appreciate it when people I’m working with use a sigfile with their various phone numbers. Often the most useful part of the e-mail.
Another rule, which may even be in Tim’s post somewhere: avoid leaving any phone message over fifteen seconds. There’s nothing more annoying than listening to a rambling recording.

I’d be cautious about this. It’s great for people in a position of strength or economic security, who feel they can afford to lose a particular client. It may even be good advice for people in a more tenuous position. As Ron related, sometimes standing up to a client is the best way to keep them, and on good terms.
But I’d like to extend my sympathy to those who are not in such a strong position, and I would totally understand — as a temporary measure — being a bit more accommodating.

Shane, does the Convergent Design/SDI route get around the long-GOP gap? I’m losing about six seconds of material at camera starts, when capturing via Firewire/HDV.
Cant’ remember now what gave me problems, only that I gave up in some frustration with capturing via the HD Connect; if you have some inside info as to how to make this work I’d love to know about it.

Thanks. I should have said I have the Kona LHe. I was trying to avoid using the Kona card in part due to a full RAID and more importantly because I’m editing part of the project and someone without a Kona is doing the rest.
How are you capturing SDI? SDI may be an option for me as I have a Convergent Design HD Connect. The Sony M25u has component video and HDMI out, unbalanced audio out. (Awhile back I tried using the HD Connect MI, but ran into technical problems and deadline pressure, so just used the M25’s component video out. I may try the Convergent Design device again.)
Yes, I know about timecode being great. It’s less important now, as I’ve gone over to backing up everything to LTO-3 tape, so I can bring a whole project back to life, with all the original filenames, folders, etc. Since then, I’ve rarely gone back to tape. But — you’re right, I have had to go back to tape occasionally.

What about the dreaded green spike? If you put on the minus-green filter, and the tungsten filter, you aren’t going to have much light left. Although I prefer the smaller size of the 128, I’m thinking of the 256.

I actually had a collection agency call me, offering their services, at the very time that I was having trouble collecting from an out-of-town client. If the collection agency ever got any money, I never saw it.

Yeah, but who hasn’t seen the client who keeps making little tweaks, especially if he perceives that they’re all “free” to him? It’s a good idea to include a reasonable number of hours for revisions, but vital to set a limit on the time allocated to them.
