But for the original, I used two versions of the file, one at SD and the other at HD size. Both had similar artifacts: bright solid-colored blocks of pixels.

There is another piece of CS4 called Adobe Media Encoder. I’ve made Quicktime movies of my files, and created a batch there to create the Flash movies. So far it seems to be working beautifully.

Which is good, because the alternative is not working at all. I tried copying over the FLV.component file from my laptop (which has CS3 and CS4) onto my desktop (CS4 only), into the Library/Quicktime folder (same place it is on the laptop).

The Flash video option shows up now in the Quicktime Conversion list, but when I choose Options, customize, and start the render, I get the spinning beachball and eventually have to kill FCP. One time that led to a panic attack shutdown of the computer.

I thought I had done a complete Flash installation when I added CS4 to the desktop. Does anyone have CS4 and a Flash option inside their Quicktime Conversions list? Or is Adobe Media Encoder the way to go now?

The Flash option from QuickTime Conversion is also missing in my desktop, which has FCP 7/Adobe CS4.

In my laptop, which is running FCP 6/Adobe CS3 and CS4, I see:
Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/FLV.component.

But I can’t find a file with that name on my (FCP7/CS4) desktop. Any suggestions?

I change the subject line frequently, so I apologize if that annoys you, Todd. You don’t seem cranky at all, but I have to disagree with you, and would not want to see locked subject lines.

1. There are benefits from changing subject lines. I don’t always have the time to look at every post in a thread, so if someone takes the discussion in a direction that sounds interesting, I like to know that. Similarly, I appreciate it when someone simply wants to say “Thanks” or “problem solved” and puts those words in the subject line, thereby saving me the small slice of time it would take to click and read.

2. There’s no substantive negative from changing subject lines. Visually, the way the COW lays out threads makes it quite easy to tell which thread a given post belongs to. Being able to scan a thread and seeing in a subject line a new twist to the discussion is like chapter headings in a book – very useful.

3. The alternative of opening up new but closely-related threads would make the busier COW forums more time-consuming to plow through.

Where I might agree with Todd: gratuitous subject line changes. But I can’t say that’s ever really annoyed me.

FWIW, CalDigit’s tech folks looked at the crash logs and pointed out a potential problem with Apple’s QuickDraw program.

Thanks, all. I talked to CalDigit Tech Support, which was great. Their RaidShield is so sophisticated that it can scare you unnecessarily. Turns out all was well in that department.

Also – a big thank you to David Weiss, who suggested that I open the Disk Utility and “Repair Disk Permissions.” I did that on the system drive, found six errors, and haven’t had a crash since.

KNOCK ON WOOD. Or brushed aluminum. And don’t knock too hard – there are drives in there!

Thanks again, everybody. Don’t know what I’d do without you. Probably leave the business — it’d be too stressful to handle these problems alone.

Your post reminds me of a business book I read too long ago to remember who wrote it. The big thought was: if you have a great product, do everything you can to kill it, by making an even better product. Because if you don’t… your competition surely will.

The American automobile industry obviously DID NOT READ THAT BOOK.
