Do you think it’s all about color, or more about control over the temporal qualities of firelight? I’ve used Magic Gadgets’ Shadowmaker and a similar controller by American-something-or-other.

re service company for the digitizing: In the Washington, DC area, Video & Film Solutions is probably a good bet. They do transfers for the National Archives, so they have a lot of equipment and experience.

You may also discover that old tape decks are readily and inexpensively available, as long as you have an I/O solution such as the AJA device Tim specified.

The other part of archiving is logging, so that after the immense job of digitizing, you can actually access the relevant material. Ideally you’d obtain text descriptions and thumbnail images of each shot. As the librarians say, “a misfiled book is a lost book.” By its nature, motion imagery is much more difficult to catalog, access and scan than are stills or words.

This forum is a wealth of information on all aspects of the task.

    Good luck!

    Hi Nick,

Interesting problem. You’re right, that a make-up artist is usually not in the budget. But maybe carrying along some make-up cream would help.

The smart-aleck in me would suggest a wide shot, or perhaps a silhouette. But I never would.

    Good luck!

Yes. Files before and after transfer fine.

I did discover that when I try to play that clip in the transfer browser, it crashes about 1/3 into it, and requires a Force Quit.

So the file must be corrupt.

    Thanks for responding!

This is fantastic news. We can all just subcontract our projects to this guy, go out on the golf course instead of working, and cash our $100 checks for doing nothing but a phone call!

    Awesome.

All good solutions. I love the idea of renting Diva’s; Rifa’s also sound great.

But when traveling, a big concern is keeping the package as portable as possible. So I use Mole Nook-lites, which are very even broads, with barn doors and dimmers. Tota-lights also work, but you may need blackwrap to keep stray light from the subject.

Waist-high shots are easy; a pair of little broads would more than suffice.

Mark, in Keylight there are a couple settings which can make a difference in noise in dark areas.

Look at Keylight/Screen Matte/Replace Method, and experiment with Soft and Hard Colour, etc.
