paull. do you have a betacam SP deck hooked up to your sd connect? i am having trouble having media100 hd recognize “legal” timecode from the box. i can control via RS422 and firewire, but it wont let me acquire because its saying it is recieving illegal timecode. i cannot digitie manually either.
also, does the hd connect le allow you to master back to tape? what kind of deck/camera setup do you have? we own a jvc hd-100u but have no way to get hd footage into media 100, not even through final cut because 24p is not supported yet…

February 2, 2006 at 8:59 pm in reply to: M100HD Real-Time Playback Errors (Lags then speeds up)i have notced the lag when scrubbing through the timeline, (ill scrub 30 seconds forward, and the monitor wont respond until i let go of the mouse and then it plays back all the frmaes i scrubbed through reallly fast on its own. from my own experience m100hd is not 100% perfect when working with the media100i codec because it is processing everything in software, as opposed to the p6000 board.
one huge complaint i have is trimming clips with audio scrubbing on… causes media100HD to crash quite frequently, only on clips with media100i codec.
we use the media100 i systems sometimes for editing and playback at a live show or convention and they are so solid, i am very nervous to take the HD system with xserve to depend on for live playback on-site at this time. It will take some time to work the kinks out

was it the HD connect or the HD connect LE? and how did it handle the firewire to RS422 translation? i have had an awful time trying to get their SD connect to work.

thanks a lot guys, the first thing i did was delete all the black clips and color clips, and removed any transitions in va/vb track. although i still had clips in the va track, it seemed to be OK, as long as i didnt have any transitions. if there was only a way to export from AE – m100HD with rendered layers, i think a lot of my pain and distrust from media 100 would go away really really fast… hehe imagine that

now that both drives are raid 5, can i use apples disk utility to format them together as one? or can this also be done within RAID admin?
-
have you seen the limitations of RAID 5 for uncompressed 8 or 10bit? someone ended up jumping the gun on me and formatted them as 2 seperate RAID 5 arrays. what problems should i expect to see if i dont go RAID 50?

Have no worries, as long as you copy the media folder to the other hard drive, media 100 will find it. thats one of media100’s true strengths. Before you totally delete your media off your scsi, unmount the scsi drive, open the program and make sure everything links up ok with your firewire drive. If it opens up and plays ok with no probelms, you can be 100% safe to delete the media off the scsi drive.
The only other factor i can think of is linked boris files (assuming you’re using media 100i). Did you create any graphics involving outside linking of logos, pictures, videos, etc? make sure you also copy those elements over or else you will notice missing elements from your graphics titles.
If you do not do the procedure i just explained above, and have a copy of the media folders on both the scsi and the firewire drive and mounted simultaneously while opening your project, you have no way of telling if any media files got corrupted during the transfer. And if any of them did, it will default to linking to files on both thh scsi and firewire drives, which you DONT want.

Thanks for the response, Floh. I will keep that in mind when the new computer arrives. (We’re deciding whether to wait for the intel desktop to come out or whether to get a quad core) But for now, i also would like to ask how any of you have your drives striped. I was thinking either RAID 3 or RAID 5. I have also bought UPSs for each power module. I will be using these drives primarily for HD video editing, but would not be limited to, say transporting the entire system for HD playback for a live show. Any suggestions?

this is reminding me of a time back in the day when people used to fight over whether avid or media 100 was better… shortly after the idea “NLE” was introduced and accepted, we would get calls by people asking us if we had an avid… we would say no and never hear from them again. then after turning quite a few people away, we learned that people were confusing the term “non linear editing system” with “avid”, much like when you ask for a “kleenex” instead of a tissue or if you have a “xerox” machine instead of a copier. they just had no idea.
so for fun then next person that called and asked if we had an avid, i said , “yes, we have an Avid Media 100 composer”. they never knew the difference, or cared. they showed up with their beta tapes and walked out happy.
the next time someone sneers at your final cut system, challenge them and ask them what is it that they want, and i bet you your final cut with XYZ hardware can and will be able to do anything. you already know it does more than the media 100. Frankly, your client will be more impressed with your plasma monitors, HD deck, waveform/vectorscope, studio furniture and xserve raid with the blinky lights than care what NLE you are editing on.
im not that dissapointed that the #1 avid editor will refuse to work on my final cut system, his day rates are probably 2-3 times more expensive anyways!
also, my biggest attraction to media100 back in the day was the quality of the compressed codec…
the ability to edit broadcast 4:2:2 YUV native video on cheap ata drives… that was a great idea. why couldn’t the same ideology be incorporated into the HD system? The only way to edit HD footage period is to spend thousands of dollars on drives. All we get is a “draft” mode which can never be used to online a video. Very dissapointing. And its not like it was impossible either… Panasonic did it and called it DVCPRO100. Yeah it is compressed, but at least i can edit hd video off a firewire drive to start off, making it an easy transition into HD. ok end rant.dont be worried about buying a final cut system, just do it . throw an avid sticker on your monitor and keyboard for eyewash.

if you want to go ultra easy, create your montages in imovie, then export/share out to quicktime and import into m100i. good for quick and easy ken burns effect
