Someone already beat you to it. There is a softcover book called “$30 Film School” that covers much of this territory. Reading this book will not get you any closer to a career in film. The sad fact is that you could spend that same $30 on a book such as “Cinematic Storytelling” and get the equivalent of a university level course in screen direction as used by top directors and editors in the business. That book has truly useful knowledge that will enhance a career.
Knowledge is power in the film and video business as it is in most other industries. The top actors, directors and editors all have spent years in the classroom perfecting their craft, and most never stop doing serious work on developing their craft. This is why I have never been unemployed for even a single day in 30 years of being an editor.
There always will be people who are truly geniuses who have the vision and brain power to transcend traditional education (the obvious example being Bill Gates), but these people are very rare.

I’m not sure if Encore supports closed captioning, but if it does, there will be a way to import a captioning file (.scc or .cc) into the authoring software. That is how you must implement closed captioning, as MPEG encoding pretty much destroys the caption data (although I have seen caption data survive encoding on rare occasions).

If the sample rate of the audio in the Quicktime movie doesn’t match the sample rate of your project (usually 48KHz), one of two things will happen depending on which system you have:
1. Avid will ask you if you want to sample rate convert the incoming import (not all Avid software supports this), or
2. Avid will import the Quicktime as is, in which case the audio is useless.
You might be able to change the sample rate of the Quicktime movie in another application.

DVD encoders are not used for this type of work. The MPEG-2 streams used in broadcast distribution typically are encoded at a bitrate around 10 – 25 Mb/s. Also you need to know whether you need a transport stream or a program stream, plus the MPEG-2 level and profile required. You can use machines like Telestream, Anystream or Digital Rapids for his type of encoding. Also there are a few manufacturers that make computer boards for this purpose.

The standard way to do this in Hollywood is to take a slight snip off the left and right edges of the image, in essence making it into 1.78:1. I’ve not seen and motion pictures on anamorphic DVD that use a slight letterbox. The letterbox technique is OK for CRT sets, but on a flat screen display with no overscan, it would be immediately visible.

HDCAM-SR does record & play 720P. Are you capturing using both HD-SDI inputs? You need to feed the dual HD-SDI outs from the VTR to both inputs on the Kona. There’s too much picture data in HDCAM-SR for one HD-SDI cable to handle.

I’m not near my Xpress Pro HD machine now, so I would guess that it would be in the Clip (or possibly Bin menu). If not, then you will have to dig through the project settings.

Do you have “Render on the Fly” turned on? That gives you a quick render of the effects in the frame you are stopped on in the timeline.

Xytech Enterprise has a library module that does this. Or you can create your own database and install barcode scanners using Foxpro and off-the-shelf hardware. We use both of these solutions in-house.
