    Bob,

I use the HDW-S280 VTR and occasionally would like to work in 23.98. Most of the time I shoot and edit using the F900 at 30psf (29.97) so everything has worked fairly well. I’m a DP and editor so my system is a small stand alone workstation. Do you have any recommendations for a black burst generator that would be appropriate for a system my size?

    Bob,

Here goes…… I have to ask….. Please give your “Black Generator Rant”.

I have a sync generator… not the the AJA Gen 10 (It may actually be an older SD Black Burst Generator) …. after reading a couple of posts about sync it seems like I might need one? I’m using the Kona 3 via FCP/Intel MAC with a HDCAM deck and Betacam BVW70.
Am I suppose to send different types of black burst to the two decks? Does that burst have to match the timing of the timeline I’m working with? 23.98, 29.97, 59.94? I have seen sync issues between the Betacam and the HDCAM deck, but I really only use the Betacam deck for down convert dubs so I could live with it…….. I would rather have everything working together in perfect HD/SD harmony!

    Thanks!

    Jeremy,

The reference was set to “video in”….. until I changed it to “Reference in” and Presto…. the problem is gone…….. Thanks!

    Chris,

Thanks for your input as well…… I now realize the “Squeeze” mode is the anamorphic mode, so I have both options up and running. Thanks!

    Walter,

Thanks….. I finally found it. I was also having some cable issues….. my multi-pin connector to the breakout box needed a little jiggle to get the connections working properly again. I think I’m good to go now using the Kona 3 for the down convert via anamorphic/analog output settings. Thanks again!

    Hi Guys,

I’ve tried the following…. with the following results:
    DECK TO DECK
Trying to down convert straight from the deck (Sony HDW-S280) to the Betacam Deck (Sony BVW-70)
The only options I found for down convert settings were…. LETTERBOX….CROP…..SQUEEZE. I’ve search through all the menus on the deck, but I can’t find a ANAMORPHIC Setting.

    VIA KONA 3
I can’t find a “PASSTHROUGH Mode”. I’m feeding the BETACAM BVW-70 component video via the analog output on the breakout box, but I’m not seeing video “Passthrough” the system. I use this path for output from my FCP timeline and it works great for down converting to Betacam. Is the passthrough setting found in FCP or do I work outside of FCP?

Any ideas of what I’m doing wrong in both cases? Thanks in advance!

Thanks guys….. I was trying to avoid capturing the footage via Kona 3, so I’ll look for the anamorphic down convert option on the deck…. thanks guys!

  • Hey Guys,

Wanted to thank you for the “Tech Knowledge”. I experimented with the worst clip from my project by following your directions and it made a huge difference! I described the problem as buzzing, but actually it was like the detail level in the camera was set too high and I was getting small image shifts in the fine detailed areas of the picture…. in this case grass. The effect is still there, but it’s acceptable for the standard def client DVD. In HD you can see something going on, but it’s hardly noticeable. I may experiment with F900 to make sure the detail is not set too high. Thanks again for all the help!

  • Carsten,

Thanks for the information, I’m going to experiment with your suggestions and attempt my encode again…… Thanks!

  • Carsten,

One more “How To” question……. I went into Compressor to try to switch on Frame Controls, but couldn’t find the menu controls……. Any tips? Thanks! And thanks to everyone who contributed to this discussion. This is such a fantastic way to communicate with the experts…. thanks again!
