HDCAM 29.97 30p Downconvert to 16X9 SD
Posted by Bill Paris on July 17, 2008 at 6:14 pmI hope this isn’t off topic?
As many of you know , some of the networks are shooting SD 16X9 and up rezzing to HD or broadcasting SD 16X9 for a “HD look”. Rather than going out and buying a SD camera with 16X9 capabilities, I tried shooting with my F900 in 29.97 30P and down converting the footage to 16X9 SD Betacam via a straight dub out of my HDCAM deck. What I ended up sending them was a 4×3 frame with the 16X9 image. What they want is a full 16X9 SD image, like a SDX900 or Betacam WS would produce…….. any ideas?
I haven’t played around with this yet…… I thought I would throw it out there to you guys first, to point me in the right direction. Thanks for your help!

July 17, 2008 at 6:18 pmYou just downconvert the footage via the Kona and set it to Anamorphic.

July 17, 2008 at 8:06 pmThanks guys….. I was trying to avoid capturing the footage via Kona 3, so I’ll look for the anamorphic down convert option on the deck…. thanks guys!

July 17, 2008 at 8:27 pmYou don’t have to capture anything. Just run the Kona 3 in Pass Through Mode.

July 17, 2008 at 11:08 pmHi Guys,
I’ve tried the following…. with the following results:
DECK TO DECK
Trying to down convert straight from the deck (Sony HDW-S280) to the Betacam Deck (Sony BVW-70)
The only options I found for down convert settings were…. LETTERBOX….CROP…..SQUEEZE. I’ve search through all the menus on the deck, but I can’t find a ANAMORPHIC Setting.VIA KONA 3
I can’t find a “PASSTHROUGH Mode”. I’m feeding the BETACAM BVW-70 component video via the analog output on the breakout box, but I’m not seeing video “Passthrough” the system. I use this path for output from my FCP timeline and it works great for down converting to Betacam. Is the passthrough setting found in FCP or do I work outside of FCP?Any ideas of what I’m doing wrong in both cases? Thanks in advance!

July 17, 2008 at 11:09 pmBill you should be able to run it from the deck or like Walter said through the Kona as a pass through converter.
The Kona would probably be a little better.

July 17, 2008 at 11:20 pmIt’s in the AJA Control Panel.
[Bill Paris] “I can’t find a “PASSTHROUGH Mode””
And the “Squeeze” mode on the deck is anamorphic.

July 18, 2008 at 12:15 amWalter,
Thanks….. I finally found it. I was also having some cable issues….. my multi-pin connector to the breakout box needed a little jiggle to get the connections working properly again. I think I’m good to go now using the Kona 3 for the down convert via anamorphic/analog output settings. Thanks again!

July 18, 2008 at 12:17 amChris,
Thanks for your input as well…… I now realize the “Squeeze” mode is the anamorphic mode, so I have both options up and running. Thanks!

July 18, 2008 at 12:21 amMy pleasure. Input Passthrough is one of those things that most folks don’t realize is there. It’s a wonderful feature for using the Kona as a conversion box while you do other things with your computer.
