November 15, 2012 at 7:24 am in reply to: Very Slow SXS UDF File Transfers via Sonnet Thunderbolt SXS AdapterRobin, thanks for your response, I downloaded the driver, restarted the computer and had the same issue. I’ve contacted the tech support at Sonnet and hopefully will get a response tomorrow. I’ve been using the adapter with good results copying BPAV files, so it surprised me when I had issues with the UDF transfer.

March 27, 2012 at 3:27 pm in reply to: Canon 5d Mark III “Unsupported Image Format” Camera Raw Files in Aperture 3.2.2James,
Thanks for the info and the links…. guess that is the problem with being an early adopter. I hadn’t read anything about the RAW files being different, so I was confused. I see they have the update for the Nikon D-800, maybe the Mark 3 update is soon to follow?
Thanks again!

October 4, 2011 at 5:57 pm in reply to: Can You Export from FCP to SXS for Play-out from PMW-500?We’re feeding the final edit to Europe via satellite after the Ironman in Kona Hawaii, we will edit on a laptop as soon as the race ends and will feed when our turn comes up, There will be a SAT truck with a HDSDI cable to hook up to… that’s it. I like the AJA Express solution….. might pick one up?
Thanks for all your thoughts and ideas!

October 4, 2011 at 3:07 am in reply to: Can You Export from FCP to SXS for Play-out from PMW-500?I was able to do it, but with a work around. Instead of using the UDF file structure that the SXS cards use to record XDCAM 422 HD, I formatted the card as FAT drive in the camera which the XDCAM EX 420 HD Format uses.
I then selected EXPORT….. XDCAM…. changed the “Format” codec to XDCAM EX and the File type to one of the XDCAM EX Codecs (XDCAM EX 30 VBR at 720) and choose the SXS as the destination.
Once the file is transferred to the SXS cards… eject and put into the camera.
At this point the camera still will not play the file. On the PMW-500 open the menu and select operate….. clip …… update….. and update the clips on the card.At this point it works! Now I just have to figure out how to do the same thing via the UDF…. XDCAM 4.2.2 50mbs codecs.

Mark,
“So are you using FCP X as part of your production workflow yet?”
No…. just playing around with it at this point. My initial take is that I like it about as much as I liked Imovie…… not very much. To be fair I haven’t had that much time working with it to get much done, but it makes me mad that if I want to stick with the FCP platform, I now have to learn a new UI after a decade of working with the old version of the program. Having come from tape based computer editing, I’ve had to learn my share of “new technology”. I was hoping that by sticking with FCP, I could continue to improve at using the program, while learning new features over the coming years. I didn’t expect a “re-design” of FCP that would completely change the way the program works. In the end it may work out that the new FCP is indeed better, especially once Apple tweeks the program to address the issues many editors are pointing out. In the meantime ….. like many editors that rely on this program to make a living, I’ll keep using FCP-7, play with the FCP-X and experiment with Avid and Adobe Premiere. Good luck …… please let us know your thoughts once you’ve had a chance to try it out!

Mark,
I just completed exactly what your planning and it worked well. I had read on other threads that FCP-X does not perform well on Snow Leopard, but I haven’t tried it. I did however install FCPX on a partition running Lion (clean Install), You have to update Snow Leopard to the latest version before installing Lion, then FCPX should install without issue.I haven’t tried any heavy lifting with the program yet, but it’s running smoothly so far.(No Spinning wheels)
The only thing wrong with it in my opinion…… well I’m sure you’ve already read all about it’s problems in other posts!Good luck with your install!
