  • Very Slow SXS UDF File Transfers via Sonnet Thunderbolt SXS Adapter

Posted by Bill Paris on November 14, 2012 at 11:32 pm

I’m getting very slow transfer speeds via the Sonnet SXS thunderbolt card reader when transferring UDF files from SXS cards to USB3 and/or FW800 portable drives through my brand new Non-Retina MBPro with Thunderbolt/USB3/FW800.

For instance a 64gig SXS card with 60 gigs of UDF files is taking 2 hours versus the same card taking on 35 minutes from my old MBP via Express card slot to USB. What the heck?

Anyone else having this issue? Any ideas? I’m seeing a couple of posts related to cards not being readable via the Sonnet card reader/thunderbolt, but nothing on the speed issue.

The strange thing…. a 30 gig BPAV file via the same path transfers in 6 minutes.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

do you have UDF driver installed..?

or you might need the sxs driver from sonnet site for Os 10.8.2

Robin, thanks for your response, I downloaded the driver, restarted the computer and had the same issue. I’ve contacted the tech support at Sonnet and hopefully will get a response tomorrow. I’ve been using the adapter with good results copying BPAV files, so it surprised me when I had issues with the UDF transfer.

Sorry if you know all this already..

From the Sony site there is a separate UDF driver ..besides the SXS devices driver..

I had read that people were having problems with the Sonnet card reader with 10.8.2.. but that a new driver from the sonnet site had solved the problem..but this problem was that it would not be able to copy at all.. or crash.. not take a long time..

Just taking ages to down load would sound like not having the UDF driver.. and so using the mac OS one that is really slow..

    Thanks

I’m going to try more tests today to see if I can isolate the problem…… will re-check the drivers.

    Thanks!

    Robyn,

Sure enough I didn’t have the UDF driver installed on my new MBP…… dooooh! The folks at Sonnet were very helpful…. operator error!

    Thanks,
