I doubt Apple will make this but I’ll bet Philip and Greg at Intelligent Assistance could if there was enough of a demand.
“Seems to me that would require a virtualization of the Entire FCP Legacy code inside such a translator wouldn’t it? Cuz without that, how do you capture all the potential states of an edit FOR translation?
And if I’m conceptualizing this correctly (tho probably not, but it’s a fun thought exercise!) – what possible point would there be for Apple to make the source code for Legacy openly available like that? It’s got to have sub-routines buried in it that were sub-licensed or otherwise IP protected.
How do you handle paying the royalties on distributing the embedded IP?
Seems like one big rats nest to avoid.
Much easier just to move on.

If you give people what they expect – that’s the choice they’ll make 9/10 times.
If they’d given me the option of color wheels from day one – I, like many, would have just set THAT as my default and NEVER really learned the color board.
Instead, I was forced to learn something new. Something that for the type of correction I need to do most often – turns out to be significantly faster. I don’t have to juggle three separate wheels for every correction.
Maybe sometimes, prioritizing innovation over conditioned comfort is a useful idea?
I get that some editors won’t see it as innovation, just “wrong.” but that’s MAYBE the trap. Is it actually “wrong” or just “unfamiliar?”
Food for thought, anyway.

Patience might be in order.

“Gadgets” is such a great world for what can be viewed as entries in a category from so many many vendors that have transformed information flow – and in fact, the very world we live in.

Personally, I think most editors may have about 5 years of truly widespread “bespoke grading” left before AI transforms the landscape. Not by removing the need to grade at the top end of the market – that will remain forever. As will the desire to employ educated colorists who can put an artistic imprint on a work. But by constantly elevating the quality of what comes out of our basic cameras and capture systems.
Even in a “mixed light” shot – AI will be auto-analyzing each pixel and imbuing it with functioning color transforms as metadata – so that you can work with the raw capture if you prefer – or a pleasingly balanced version if you prefer. And I think that type of automation is coming toward us fast.
I also think that most people who do content generation will welcome systems that eliminate time consuming visual issues as early in the production chain as possible.
My 2 cents. We’ll see what happens.

But Brian, slowing down to manage tracks is BENEFICIAL.
It gives you more time to creatively simmer in your material.
You see the clip when you import it.
You see it again when you string it out.
You see it again and again and again as you visually scan that lovely string out – back and forth – over and over like a hungry man approaches a buffet stocked with delicacies!
You see it again when you “pancake” that special clip into your timeline.
oh, I’ve made the CHOICE! (shiver) I do so hope it works.
Are we being nourished yet?
Wait, it needs SEASONING. I must trim and flavor it MORE. Until it’s sublime.
The software is helping me build a SPECIAL relationship with that shot. Shot? No, visual food for my very soul.
Until that MAGIC moment it becomes a glorious part of MY CREATION (longer shiver)

Without the ability to see and consider every single clip almost endlessly – juxtaposed (just so!) how can any truly qualified cutter make a decent creative decision about it? Anyone who just wants to have that clip visually hidden away (sob) until the instant you “keyword call it up” directly into your timeline – is hack and a fool and doesn’t understand this business…
It’s FAST FOOD editing. For the damaged and the soulless.

Yep, the above is insulting, stupid, and beneath the dignity of a real discussion.
Fun to write for EFFECT, tho. It’s always Fun to Wildly exaggerate the truth.
But in the end, mostly writing this way produces cute sounding CRAP.
Because we’ve had lots and lots of worthy discussions here – that touch on exactly the concepts I was pseudo mocking above.
ALL it demonstrates, IMO, is how easy is it to exaggerate someone else’s reasonable thinking and trash their ideas.
I will watch myself more about stuff like this.
Hopefully others will join me in trying to do that.
I STILL think too many of the posts here (like this one) are antagonistic to the forum brand – but that’s a better topic for a different thread.

I”m talking about the SEARCH brand – which is quite possibly the ONLY brand worth building anymore, anywhere.
If people type in “God” and the only top results returned are those promoted exclusively by – say – Scientology – is that a problem? Would anyone feel it’s a situation that needs to be addressed?
It weakens the effectiveness of search – (except for those of THAT bent, I suppose.) but it arguably DOES NOT meet the needs of the people searching.
Results of search that provide “some” unexpected results are fine. Great, in fact. Happy accidents should be encouraged.
Results of search that ONLY provide the unexpected – are damaging to the very idea of “search” itself – in my opinion.
Here’s a thought experiment:
Lets say we were all to go to the Premiere Pro forum here – and working together – make every single topic thread on the landing page there – exclusively about how DeVinci Resolve functions – to the extent the words Adobe nor Premiere get pushed off the front page.
It’s all theoretical and nobody actually gets hurt, right? So what’s the problem?
And if you argue, it’s NOT any problem at all – I say we try it!
If each of us posts a couple of RESOLVE only discussions there – we could swamp that board – and see if any of the Premiere users there have a problem with it?
Wouldn’t be that hard to do the experiment, right?
Or would that be unreasonable and kinda dickish?

I use Handbrake much the same way you appear to have used Streamclip.
But this big transition away from 32-bit apps is going to be a big thing going forward.
Without it, the industry is artificially held back.
Hopefully, there are new kids out there that will fill the shoes of those who created Streamclip, Handbrake, et al – for a new, more modern era of video processing.
So – if you have parental custody of one of the pre-teens out there hacking away in Swift or the like – keep them focused! This industry is going to NEED them before we know it!

If “tracklessness” was the driver in X it would be one thing.
But that’s just one aspect of a pretty cohesive approach to scene assembly. Magnetic timeline behaviors, vertical relationship pinning, and the default of clip creation that can accommodate audio AND video in a single cohesive unit – all work together in X to make it work as it does.
IMO It’s “tracklessness” would be a very different thing without all the other factors working in concert.

I have a different perspective here.
With modern editing software, making an alt cut to try out new music should be pretty trivial.
There’s no downside I can see to sending a watermarked copy of the project for the client’s composer to play around with. He or she can strip out the audio and play around to their hearts content.
If they can improve things – GREAT.
If not, the only thing that’s happened, is that somebody new (the composer) has seen your work. That’s a PLUS in my book.
If they come up with something interesting, It’s equally trivial to clone the current project and adjust things for the new score.
Heck, I edit in FCP X – and I bet I’d find it really interesting to create a new Audition for the alt music – adjust the scene timings to the alternate score (should take maybe half an hour?) – and switch back and forth between the two versions to see how the different scores affect the visual layout.
Isn’t this exactly WHY we all use non-linear editing today.
So we can make changes easily in search of the best result?
