One of the subtle indicators that it’s important to learn to notice in X is “the shelf” – the gray bar that indicates a secondary storyline.
Quite a few actions ( such as adding a transition) results in that clip becoming a secondary storyline automatically.
The Shelf is practical as well, since selecting and dragging it moves the entire secondary assembly as a unit.
Lots to learn in X. Keep going!

And there it is in a nutshell.
The perfectly reasonable desire to protect the value of something you are slready conditioned to see as the “expected” way a process should work.
It’s totally understandable. Perfectly defensible. Who wants to jettison hard won knowledge and expertise unless there is a compelling reason to do so?
And if the present process is working for you why bother?
Those of us who have found extra speed, efficiency and convenience in the Color Board approach can never know if the way X does things will ever meet your needs or preferences.
But the unfortunate history of voices arguing lots of things about X being “sub standard” only to have them proved to be perfectly reasonable changes – changes that actually helped X editors work well – means it’s fair to flip the narrative now.
If three wheels are superior to the Color Board by some demonstrative metric BEYOND historic conditioning and familiarity – it’s on Color Wherl proponents to make that case.
Many, many X editors I communicate with LOVE editing with it. Color board included.
I’m with Ron in that I have Color Finale loaded, but barely use it.
You may think it X itself needs to be more like your other tools.
I might not.

By the transitive property of THIS forum – that makes it germane I guess. (Just be nice and don’t tell the folks in Field Production we’re doing this here. That’s where this sort of discussion would likely find a much more experienced class of voices and where the NLE Software is, as it should be, irrelevant.)Personally, I will NEVER again invest in a non-core production technology I can’t fully cover the cost of in 1-3 jobs out of a reasonable percentage of those specific jobs profits.
The pace of innovation has screwed up the idea of depreciation so totally today. Spend $1500 on a nice drone today – and in 6 months better capabilities cost $500 – and the old unit is close to obsolete cuz it’s too big, too noisy, doesn’t run long enough, runs on the wrong batteries, and didn’t sell enough to guarantee a parts stream or whatever. Yes, it will still be perfectly useful. Great even. It just will feel “yesterday” to all who watch you operate it.
Heck, if it’s really useful, Yongnuo will have one in a few months that does 90% of what the expensive one does – for $59.95.
It’s stupid how it works today.
Buy it – use it on those couple of jobs – and try to SELL IT QUICK at under a 50% loss. Cost of doing business.

Two different eras involved.
Paul is talking about the present.
Oliver is discussing what happened 6-10 years ago.
It’s odd, that so many people who diss X (in general, not Oliver!) do so while clearly dragging around the residual personal hurt of 2011. I see it ALL the time when debating with people on other boards.
Say one nice thing about X – and it triggers them to re-litigate the launch or the first year of X over and over ad nauseam..
It’s almost as if they had a narrative that made them feel righteously indignant – and now nothing will move them off those feelings – even in the face of a new situation.

The other perspective, of course is that as primarily Video Editors and not Colorists – we appreciate the fact that X has all the tools necessary to put out a superfast base-graded CUT yet is not slowed down and made “heavier” but someone deciding that our software ALWAYS NEEDS to sit on top of an entire suite of bespoke colorists tools – regardless of whether a specific editor will EVER need to use them.
It’s not like we can’t add them as needed via Chromatic, Finale, or work through Resolve – but if we don’t need that, we don’t have to unnecessarily drag that stuff around all the time.
Some of us appreciate this much agility in such a light code footprint.

It’s at least as serious as most of the nearly useless debate in this thread.
We’re all just spitballing here, because everyone understands there’s really no functional difference with how Apple lets you adjust a color parameter on a rectangle – compared to how a traditional 3 way does it with a group of circles.
It all works just fine. The rest is just contankerism writ large, IMO.

No Oliver, Exposing new optional ways to approach a needed task – THATs what options mean. Not having 10 programs that all use the same metaphors for color correction because someone in the 1960s (maybe with experience in circular WWII oscilloscopes?) decided three round scopes were the only proper design construct.
How very ADOBE of you.
