Appreciate it Tony, but the important part of the comment wasn’t the stuff about me.
It was the stuff focused on the tools and how they approach the production process.
.
Understanding the debate about THAT is useful. The other stuff, not so much.
(BTW, When I was in Cupertino at the Summit – I mentioned your name to a guy I know who is going to be in St. Louis on business in a bit and who loves chatting about X.
He might touch base. Or not. Hard to say. Take Care.)Creator of XinTwo – https://www.xintwo.com

I know.
It’s so weird so many of us are now getting work done every day without “tracks and a mixer.” It’s probably all just an evil spell and soon, the “veil of deception” will be lifted and those years of X-crafted content in films, docs, tv, music, commercials and training will simply disappear in a shimmering haze of myst.
Not an hour ago I was watching footage of hundreds of producers, story editors and finishing editors cutting big time content collaboratively on X – and not a traditional audio track or skewomorphic virtualized version of a 1970s-style mixer in sight.
Who could have EVER seen any of THAT coming?
????

My seat mate on my flight to San Jose was a 40 something video producer who works the rapidly emerging Drone Racing Circuit.
40-50 cameras (of all types) covering the race course.
Sports?
Sorta?
Kinda? But nothing like what I grew up thinking of as a “sports show” tho.
And so it goes.

Precisely.
I’ve lost nothing. Folks who wanted extended color tools gained something.
We all win.
Works for MacBook Pro people – the iMac and the new iMac Pro folks. (Those were beautiful and multiple streams of 8k runningly fluidly was pretty impressive – especially if you’re delivering 1080 – that’s a LOT of leeway to re-frame for a wide, medium and CU as needed, perhaps
Also notice in the top shot below, the iPad Pro next to the MBPro? You can shoot in iOS in HEVC – Airdrop it into X on a laptop – and X will now open those files directly for refinement.
An iPad Pro as a basic camera/prompter – iPhone for quick B-Roll maybe- quick review and select on the same iPad via iMovie iOS – then AirDrop into X on a MBPro for color and cut – and push it to the world…
How does anyone keep information under wraps – when a whole useful production kit can basically fits into a large manilla envelope?
There’s no need for most of us to do that – we already have superior traditional tools – but there WILL be people in places where this will enable interesting stories to emerge that maybe weren’t as possible before this astonishing capability lived in such a small and and inconspicuous footprint.
We live in interesting technological times.

As usual, nobody outside Apple knows for sure.
Richard Taylor is going to be doing reports via Facebook Live from the Summit. You might check on his feed starting Friday morning. The main Apple sessions is Friday at 3pm PST – scheduled to run until 5:30 – with a big social event that evening. So between those, whatever has been okayed for public release – will likely start hitting the web.
FWIW.

October 23, 2017 at 6:24 pm in reply to: Great write up about the Despacito video and FCP XI think I’ve watched Despisito a couple of dozen times over the past few weeks since I watched the genesis of this story take place on-line – (Props to T.Peyton who originally spotted X in the piece!) but I still had a major mental disconnect in linking the beauty of the video with the post hurricane distruction we can see in the photos attached to Ronny’s story. (The destruction of so much authentic beauty just breaks my heart, and serious thanks to this videos creative team for forever preserving it in this work!)
I hope as this story spreads – It can encourage a renewed focus on ALL the islanders who are still deeply in recovery mode.
Puerto Rico is the US.
There are British, French, and other communities nearby – and they all need help.
But this one is ours.
And we should be able to do MUCH better than we seem to be doing there.
Just my 2 cents.Creator of XinTwo – https://www.xintwo.com

October 21, 2017 at 10:06 pm in reply to: Is there a way to see items outside/overhanging the edges of the viewer?[Tim Vining] “Okay, thanks–bit of a drag. It seems like this should be a toggle on/off item, and not really that complicated to implement.”
Send in a feature request.
I’ve come to think that the X development team tends to work on “areas” of the software – working to improve sections cohesively as opposed to working on individual “features” in isolation.
At least that’s been my experience watching how they have delivered things in the past.
How X displays images “off the canvas” would likely come up when they are addressing how movement and display of image frames works globally in all areas of the software. So you’d get it (if they addressed it) across all the code. Not just in the Viewer – but during import, in the browser, in Multicam and similar reference clips, in export options, etc, etc.
My 2 cents.
(but I could easily be wrong)

[Andrew Kimery] “Is this what you are referring to, Bill?”
Yep.
The interesting thing is that “ephemeral copy” approach.
At least as I (rudimentarily) understand it.
The person wanting access to the Library can open, access, and even copy elements from a non-mounted outside library for use in their discrete operations – but when the access is terminated, the virtualized copy is eliminated. So the issue of constantly making new copies of existing libraries all in different states of completion – is avoided..
It’s not the holy grail of true collaboration, obviously. But it appears to solve quite a few specific collaborative issues like the need for outside vendors to constantly update the state of an evolving project for their contributions – without multi-version conflicts arising.
Theoretically, the collaborator could do a “last ephemeral update” just prior to their delivery deadline – make any needed adjustments – and then the host editor could substitute that copy of the Event or Library for their “working copy” – allowing a slightly different form of round-tripping.
This is theoretical musing – I’ll see the actual product in Cupertino next week. Until then, I’m mostly just guessing.

[Andrew Kimery] “This is where clients being unable to imagine/visualize means a lot of rough cuts look like nearly finished cuts. Jump cuts/frankenbites during interviews are distracting so you have to add broll. The pace and/or emotional level is too hard to discern so you have to add music. The levels between the different interviews and the music are all over the place so you have to do a rough audio pass. Static images are boring, thus distracting, so you have to do moves on everything. Cutting between mismatched cameras is distracting so you have to do a first color pass. Individual scenes are hard to assess out of context so you have edit an entire act (or acts) so clients aren’t going in cold.
That’s a lot of labor to see if you are headed in the right direction. I’ve worked on a number of new shows and the first episode of a season 1 show can easily take 2-3 times longer than the other episodes as the network and producers try to nail down the right look and feel.
“This is my EXACT experience as well.
Particularly regarding the TV commercial work that comes my way. With the typical gigantic pile of “media placement” cash that rests on just :30 of creative – 20 versions of the same spot for a client with the ONLY difference being a tiny change in the grammar in one title card – is completely common.
I just delivered 16 spot versions to a client on Tuesday – I would be utterly shocked if a single one of those EVER sees air.
After a couple of months of that process – there might be 2 spots as campaign deliverables – with 100 or more versions of jettisoned in their wake.
Their purpose is to be used in client discussions about how the creative makes the stakeholders “feel” – and therefore which creative paths are the most likely to yield the best results.
MY feeling is how X handles snapshots, versions, and auditions, etc – and how it (like other programs) has come to interfaces with collaborative production systems like Frame.io – has eased my job by HUGE amounts over how I was doing things even a year ago.
New world today. MUCH better world.
