You cannot “capture” through usb. You can only copy the files from the cards. On a Mac you can import them into FCP using XDCAM Transfer from Sony.

Sony’s ClipBrowser software for Windows can export to MXF files (the Mac version doesn’t). Maybe Premiere eats that?

My camera came with a user manual 😉

Firewire out only works with supported video formats for HDV, so 1080/50i, 1080/60i and 1080/24p.

    Good luck!

My guess is, the camera plays back only its own sort of files. So mp4’s with the right codec combined with all the small files in the clip folders (with timecode details and so on).

In your situation I would use something like a Matrox MXO between MBP and screen. Saves you the encoding process and you can leave the cam at home…

My guess is, don’t fumble with your timecode settings. I’m not the only one:

I’ve been using different methods, all with the same results.
I’ve tried it straight from the camera.
I’ve tried it with the files copied to disk with the ClipBrowser.
I’ve tried it with copying everything with the finder as you described.

When I open the included XML in a text editor, there are also some weird numbers for the timecode (let’s say 17:13:44:46 in a 25p situation). My guess is the camera makes a “mistake” while writing timecode to the cards.
I’m also in touch with Sony support, but that might take a while…

I wish it was that simple. It has to do something with the camera writing wrong timecode to some files and XDCAM Transfer not able to deal with that.

Out here some guys have the same issues…

Another way to convert the files would also be nice to know. MPEG Streamclip won’t open them…

I’ve never tried it myself yet, but Photoshop CS3 Extended might even do the trick…
