  • thanks to you both. i kinda had all this figured out in my head, but wanted to get second opinions from proffessionals like yourselves. I think i will shoot for straight file delivery out of after effects, but if its proving too complicated, i will redigitize.

    thanks again guys.

so here is what we figured out, and this is what the client had intended under reccommendation from the DP.

used the 720 60 capture preset and let the deck playback the footage at 29.97fps into the final cut. and just to clarify…this did not do a slomo. the footage looked normal speed. then took it and copied it into a new project and used the DVCProHD frame rate converter tool inside final cut, and had it turn the footage into 29.97
and i got a very nice slo mo effect.

go figure….i guess 40fps DOES give you a slow mo effect. quite a substantial one.

thanks to all those who gave me their input.

  • thanks for the comments,

so the cameraman did not shoot overcranked on purpose. more like he has no clue what he is doing. we have been editing in the meantime with all the other footage which is fine. But i am rapidly coming up on having to use part of this footage thats messed up. so here is the latest on the problem:

i got a drive fedexed from the camera man. it has the original P2 files and folder structure. when i put it through “log and transfer” and i preview the clips using the little preview window….its gorgeous…as it should be. all in sync, not choppy at all…audio matches length of video etc etc.

so i hit “add selection to queue” and it did its thing. when it was done i checked the quicktimes ( not even in final cut ) and again…choppy, out of sync, audio length doesnt match video length. awful again.

when i open the quicktimes, and hit apple “i”, and it says frame rate 23.98, but “compressor-720p 60”

so the system is somehow compressing on import, but its using “720p 60 to compress” so we get the overcranked, choppy slow mo stuff.

i dont see how i can change the import settings !! does it depend on what easy setup you are using ? on your preferences ?! i read somewhere that toast might help, but i dont want to go buying software now. it seems impossible that FCP would not be able to import P2 23.98 !!!

    im on a G5 quad ( non intel ) final cut 6.0.6

    any ideas ?

    thanks !!

  • just had this problem as well….could not render or export my sequence. i found a CMYK based jpeg in my sequence that was the culprit. who knew.

July 1, 2009 at 7:33 pm in reply to: Blue Ray Data DVD’s

thanks noah, i think we we have weighed all our options, and ave decided that if we could fit 50 gigs on to a blue ray disc for long term storage, thats the perfect solution for us. we do 30 second tv spots…so projects CAN be big, but usually never exceed 50 gigs. So my question is which blue ray data disc drive works for our G5 workflow ? what brand ? odes it have to be internal ? or is it external ? SATA or firewire ? what software do i need to purchase to use it ?

    thanks.
