HELP ! this thing has got me BEAT.

client had a DP shoot an entire shoot in P2. when I got the drive, it was not P2 folder structures, but straight up logged and transfered quicktimes. it seems they had a P2 tech at the shoot that just logged and transfered as they went in order to free up cards? when i imported them in final cut, and started going through them to rename them ( since P2 has its ridiculous file naming ), i noticed that an entire day of shooting was shot at DVCPro HD 23.98, and NOT DVCPro HD 59.94 like everything else.
The 59.94 footage looks great, im using the AJA Kona 720p 59.94 8 Bit “easy setup” in final cut, and i can see all my 59.94 footage nicely on my HD monitor, and audio sounds great. But when i got to the 23.98 footage, it looked choppy and reeeeeeaaally slow mo. SO i figured it was final cut not understanding the 23.98, even though i tried every single easy setup possible.
I looked at the native quicktimes i was given, and same thing…the 59.94 ones look great, the 23.98 ones look choppy and slow mo and audio is HALF the length of video.
When i look at the “compressor” column in the final cut bin…it says DVCPro HD 720p 60.
i think this is where my problem is…the clips were compressed ( although im not sure how…when you do log and transfer, you dont really get a choice to compress in a certain way…it just reads the P2 footage as what it is.) hey were compressed at 60, and not 23.98 or 24.

the deal is…i dont know what to do !! how do i compress them BACK ? i tried several settings in MPEG streamclip, i tried different things…even time remapping in after effects with NO LUCK.

ANY insight is much appreciated !

Tell your client you need the original P2 files. Do not try and recompress the files you already have.

Sounds like the camera guy had the camera set up to shoot 720p slow motion. That’s where, in camera, they shoot 60fps but recorded as 24fps. Not VERY helpful when the rest of the footage is 720p60…how were they expecting to mix the slow motion?

God, I hope they kept the original P2 structure. Too many people don’t, and that really messes things up.

If the clips were recorded overcranked 60 over 24, then drop the 23.98 clips in a 59l94 sequence, and they should playback in slow motion w/pulldown.

    thanks for the comments,

so the cameraman did not shoot overcranked on purpose. more like he has no clue what he is doing. we have been editing in the meantime with all the other footage which is fine. But i am rapidly coming up on having to use part of this footage thats messed up. so here is the latest on the problem:

i got a drive fedexed from the camera man. it has the original P2 files and folder structure. when i put it through “log and transfer” and i preview the clips using the little preview window….its gorgeous…as it should be. all in sync, not choppy at all…audio matches length of video etc etc.

so i hit “add selection to queue” and it did its thing. when it was done i checked the quicktimes ( not even in final cut ) and again…choppy, out of sync, audio length doesnt match video length. awful again.

when i open the quicktimes, and hit apple “i”, and it says frame rate 23.98, but “compressor-720p 60”

so the system is somehow compressing on import, but its using “720p 60 to compress” so we get the overcranked, choppy slow mo stuff.

i dont see how i can change the import settings !! does it depend on what easy setup you are using ? on your preferences ?! i read somewhere that toast might help, but i dont want to go buying software now. it seems impossible that FCP would not be able to import P2 23.98 !!!

    im on a G5 quad ( non intel ) final cut 6.0.6

    any ideas ?

    thanks !!

In the log and transfer preferences (the gear looking thing in the log and transfer window), turn off the option that says ‘remove duplicate frames’ and reimport.

And FCP is NOT recompressing the footage. The footage is DVCPRo HD 720p. The compressor type for that footage, no matter the frame rate, is 720p60. Because this was initially a tape format.

Things are fine there. You can ignore that. But do what Jetemy said and turn off remove pulldown.

Having the exact same issue today. Have footage that was shot as 720p/60 and needs in be imported with pulldown removal… when the shot comes in, it plays choppy and audio cuts out in the middle of the clip.

If I select to NOT remove pulldown (in prefs) then the file comes in at 59.94 and plays fine as well as having full audio.

Unfortunately this needs to be cut along with Red footage that is 23.976. Why they did not shoot 24p-native on the HVX I have no idea.

Any clues or leads would be appreciated.

    Lucas,

Did you ever get that issue solved? I’m having the same problem with my HVX.

[Steve Tharp] “Did you ever get that issue solved? I’m having the same problem with my HVX.”

Do what Lucas did (import as 59.94) as either simply drop the clips in a 23.976 timeline (FCp will remove the proper pulldown) or use the DVCPro HD Frame Rate Converter under the tools menu.
