If people spent the amount of effort to make all their other duff technology and gear work as they are obviously doing with FCPX, my local refuse tip wouldn’t fill up half as quickly. They used to call this “flogging a dead horse”.

I thought that was the point of earlier generations – all NLEs were growing to work the same way, because that’s the way it works bets. Not because one manufacturer said so, but because that’s the way users liked it. All that JKLIO SPACE worked on Avid, so rivals decided to use it, and all gradually join in. Very sensible for all.

If it’s going to take HD video, it had better be a very fast moving cloud. In any case, a lot of people aren’t going to want to send their expensive rushes out into who-knows-where where who-knows-who can hack it. Also the stuff about Windows 8 isn’t true. ZDNet says –
“The Windows update will come with one version of IE for the operating system’s touch-friendly Metro interface, which debuted in Windows Phone 7, and one for the traditional Windows desktop interface. The latter will support Flash and other plug-ins, but the Metro-style IE10 will not, according to IE team leader Dean Hachamovitch.”

So the product updates are based on a high end processor which itself has infrequent updates.
And all the MacPros currently available in the UK Mac store have ATI HD5770 graphics cards, now 2 years old. In the PC world they say – if you’re going to upgrade one thing, make it your graphics card.

Wondering what a “Xeon” actually is…just marketing or a different range?
One section in Wikipedia says “The same processors are marketed for mid-range to high-end desktops systems as Core i5 and Core i7”.

You mean – slightly more expensive motherboards and PSUs, bigger and more fans. Once again, it isn’t a step change, just a matter of buying different parts from the parts shop. Have a look – on this page https://tinyurl.com/3om9kk9 there are over 200 motherboards to choose from. What makes a particular one suitable for a “workstation”? Depends on what you want in it really. All levels and prices are catered for. None say workstation.
HP offer a page on their website so you can configure your workstation (if you can stand the wait), so what will make it a workstation rather than just another high spec pc? Marketing, that’s all
…and a Mac is just another PC with lots of marketing and a different operating system.
