Out in the big world of the pc, two more generations of graphics card will have passed by, the Z77 chipset, which is current, will be stone age, DDR4 will be either standard or being phased out, Thunderbolt will probably be passed by. Where will they decide to leap on the roundabout? 2013 is as easy as tomorrow or next week. By the time they get their act together the pro world of the Mac will be long forgotten.
One more thing I don’t understand is the desperate preoccupation with Xeon chips. Core i7s – even i5s if you’re are me – are good enough for everyone else except the server market, which is what they were designed for. And yet people here go on and on about the various varieties in their Mac Pros, all of which are long out of date along with their graphics cards.
I see that TonyMac and co now have drivers for the GTX6xx, for those who’ve given up and built their own.

I don’t really know anything about SUVs or iPods – or US car sales either. I just think car analogies are appropriate in this context.

Yes, I think an awful lot of people will just click on desktop and never go back. And there’s already a third party program (ViStart) which puts the start menu back.I almost never use it, but I do use the button itself to access the control panel etc.
Personally, I might well skip W8, in the way that I skipped Vista, WMe and W98_original. Windows 7 works very well, and W9, which I’m running in VirtualBox, doesn’t appear to add anything for the desktop user that I can find so far.

The graphics card on all those is an ATI HD 5770 – a 2009 low cost model.

– might be considered as fair as possible. The answer as ever seems to be you get what you pay for. Whether the extra speed vs the cost is worth it depends on the usage. Also, of course, in many applications, like PPro, the graphics card is important – and whether it’s worth spending on a Quadro card over a GTXxxx is another discussion.

Indeed – why would you? You can buy a Bugatti Veyron and go to the shops with it if you want, but something a little cheaper will do just as good a job – and HP workstations are the PC equivalent. You just don’t need the “build quality” to get the job done. And that’s probably why they’re laying off staff – wrong product for the market.
As for OSX v W7 – personally, like lots of other here, I just switch back and forth these days. Like using my wife’s car instead of mine to go to the shops. No big deal, and not much difference. 1995 was a good long time ago now.

Build. It’s easy stuff, and you can have the very latest gear with OSX, if that’s what you want. A Mac is just an operating system these days. It’s ok, but Windows 7 is just as good, and better in some ways. It’s a bit strange to hear that ancient stuff about “never Windows”. Sounds very 1995.
