HI David,
What error message do you get when you try to move a clip from one bin to another?

Hi Francois,
I have been evaluating Telestream’s new Vantage product. It does much of what FlipFactory does with a vastly improved user interface. It has the potential to do much more than FlipFactory. The 30-day trial does not watermark video the way the FlipFactory demo does. Might be worth a try out.
I have been evaluating AVID to Omneon and ProfileSD conversions as well as workflow decision making based on file contents and audio normalization.
So far, I like this better than FlipFactory. It has priced out higher than FlipFactory, but in my opinion it’s worth it. Eventually, Telestream plans to replace FlipFactory with Vantage, but that is some ways down the road.

Yes I do. Another thing to note with the software activation is the hardware ID of the machine you are running on is dependent upon the NIC configuration of your computer.
If you have a wireless NIC enabled and working as the primary NIC when you activate AVID, the NIC must always be on and active as the primary for AVID to start. IF you have to change a NIC card for some reason you will have to reactivate AVID with the new NIC installed. That to me is the biggest drawback of software activation. It’s not too bad to deal with as long as you are aware of that quirk.

Also, the dongle will let you run any version of AVID up to the authorized version on the dongle. For instance, if the dongle is authorized for MC5.5 and you have, for some ungodly reason, some need to run MC4.x or MC3.x, simply plug in the dongle and go.
That being said, the dongle does take up a USB port that could be used for something else.
Dongle vs software is a matter of preference and priority. I manage systems with dongles for work. My personal installation is software activated.

I know this thread is getting long in the tooth, but,
The Clips to Bin creates master clips in the selected bin that are linked to the P2 folder in which the P2 media resides. The ImportP2>Media will move the media to a media drive and convert into AVID media.
If you have a dongle authorized for 4.0, you can still install and run a previous version of Media Composer. You can download installers for previous versions from AVID’s website.
3.5 and above introduce the AMA plugin feature that makes working with P2 folders a little less awkward.

***RESOLVED****
I just thought I would update this thread for the benefit of others who subsequently read this. The problem I was having was an apparent compatibility issue with the motherboard in the Dell Vostro. I was able to purchase an HP xw4600 to replace the Dell. The Ultrascope has been running for almost 3 days now and is still performing flawlessly. Thank you Bob and Kristian for your input.

Yep. I’m running the debug logger now. I should have a 4670 video card in hand tomorrow to try.

Hi Kristian,
I submitted a support request via the website shortly after 1pm Eastern time. I haven’t gotten a response as of yet. In the meantime, I ordered a Radeon HD 4670 to see if that will make a difference. I should have it in Wednesday.
The signal being fed to the card is 1080i/59.94 from an AVID NitrisDX.

hmmm, If they told you and have printed in the manual 4670 and above, why do they have posted on their website 4650 and above? (This is possibly a rhetorical question) The Minimum specs posting on the support page lists the 4650 as acceptable. I suppose it’s time for me to contact them directly before I start nickel and diming myself to death on this one.
Thanks for your input.

HI Bob
I see a phrasing error on my part. My Avid is on a xw8600 with a NitrisDX. The Ultrascope is on the Dell. Separate PCs. I would never dream of trying to add the Ultrascope (or anything else that AVID has not blessed) onto the same workstation as my AVID. I only mentioned the AVID as a remote possibility of a change in signals as the AVID shuts down causing the issue. From what I have seen, I know that is not the case.
If you had no success with a Dell workstation class PC, I probably don’t stand a chance at getting a Dell desktop PC to work. I suspect I may be battling a Motherboard/chipset incompatibility.
Although,….Did you use the ATI driver on the CD that came with your 4650 or download the latest driver from AMD’s website?
