  • Can’t move/copy clips between bins

Posted by David Neumann on July 7, 2011 at 10:24 pm

    Hi All,

I’ve recently lost the ability to move/copy clips from one bin to another. No ‘event’, or setting changes I can think of, have taken place to justify this.

I used to be able to drag clips to move to another bin. I used to be able to ‘Alt,drag’ clips and sub-clips to other bins. Project is a doc I’ve been working on for several years so my bins are quite big, lots of footage.

I’m running Avid Xpress Pro 5.7 with Mojo on an HP NW9440 Laptop.

Thanks in advance for your help!

    HI David,

What error message do you get when you try to move a clip from one bin to another?

    Hi Ben,

I don’t get an error message or dialogue box telling me what’s going on.

When I select an item the cursor is shaped like a hand. When I drag/alt drag the item into the new bin it will either remain hand shaped (if I’m hovering over the first column in text view, the clip symbol) or shaped like an “I” beam (if I hover over the Name column) or an arrow (if I hover over any of the columns to the left of Name).

Whatever the shape of the cursor though I can’t move/copy that clip!

    Thanks

    David

Hmmmmm. that’s a weird one. I have never seen that behavior. I have seen where permissions on the bin files get wiggy and you will get an ACCESS DENIED error, but not what you are describing.

Have you tried searching AVID’s knowledgebase?
    https://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/selfservice/search.jsp

or the user forum on AVID’s website?
    https://community.avid.com/forums/

I usually check those 2 places in addition to here.

Have you tried creating a new user on the laptop, or a new user in AVID to see if that behavior persists?

Try the same with some new user settings.

I think older versions had a limit to how many objects could be contained in a bin.

    Hi Ben,

Thanks for the suggestions. I didn’t find an answer in the Knowledge Base or Avid’s website,

Setting up a new Avid user didn’t help either unfortunately. I switched users, created a new user profile with no improvement.

I opened up other smaller Avid Projects and still no ability to Copy/Duplicate clips tothe other bins in those projects either

Not having luck creating and switching to a new Window XP user. New user names don’t show up on reboot or as an option on Log Off. Plus I’m the only on on this computer so no possibility of User Contamination – if there is such a thing?

    Thanks again for your time

    Thanks Job,

I tried both switching to other User Settings and creating new User Settings. I opened up older and smaller projects and still had the same problems.

    Cheers,

    David

    Hi David,

Even if you are the only user on the Windows machine, a user profile can sometimes get corrupted. I have had weird things happen after software installation/uninstallation. Can you recall the last time that everything was working normally? Maybe do a system restore back to that time or a time before that?

that would be the last thing I can think to try before doing a re-install. Not being able to move or copy from one bin to another can be quite annoying. Probably not exactly a killer, but annoying.

    Hi John,

Thanks for the suggestion to look at the number of objects in a bin as a possible problem area. I found a related discussion here. https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/45/865442

I wonder if this is the problem though if I can’t copy/duplicate/move clips in my other smaller projects that only have a handful of clips in a couple of bins.

    Cheers,

    David

    Hi Ben,

Thanks for the user setting idea. I can’t remember the exact time this started happening. It is a terrible thing to admit but I don’t feel comfortable doing system restore . Also not familiar with switching/creating user settings. I’ll have to bring this to a tech I use in emergencies.

I did notice that in addition to not being able to drag/duplicate to other bins I can’t load clips to source window by dragging them. Can’t drag sequences to the Record window to open Timeline either.

I revisited Avid Fourms and found someone else had this problem https://c2.avid.com/forums/p/64808/362951.aspx
they were advised to “Trash: MC State, Site_Settings, Site_Attributes” I did that but no difference.

    Anyway, thanks for your help.

    David
