What kind of “erratic results are you seeing?
I’ve had fine results with the current Squeeze bits and WMV.
Note that Squeeze 4.5.x still installs the old Formast SDK 9.5 bits. If you install Windows Media Player 11 on the same machine, you’ll get the newer, faster, better video codec.

ProCoder will support compression markers coming in in .avi from Premiere Pro or .mov from Final Cut Pro.
Also, if you’re using ProCoder, make sure you have it set to “Mastering Mode” which is one beyond highest quality. It can help with challenging content like you’ve got.
But the color issues are probably playback, as was suggested.

Or you could use ProCoder or Squeeze, which can read your .mov directly (including reference movies), and encode straight from there.

Also, if you use Soapbox instead, you can get 400×300, and in better quality as well…

.m2t is a Transport Stream, used for broadcast. Typically, they will use Dolby Digital audio instead of Layer II.
.mpg is a Program Stream.

I like to stick to 6.5 Mbps peak for DVD-R.
6.3 Mbps peak for video, 192 Kbps AC-3 audio. As for average, that depends on how much content you have. If it’s south of 90 minutes, just CBR will work.

Yeah, that could mean anything from VideoCD to a file on an ISO disc.

It’ll be corrected on the screen, so you shouldn’t have a problem.

You can expect compression tools to include GUI for these settings in the future. The PowerToy is a nice option for users to play around with more advanced settings in the interim.
Also, note that Windows Media Encoder isn’t intended to be the flagship professional encoding product. We expect that most professional WMV encoding is done with other tools built on top of our technologies.
